I have never liked dairy products from being a child and know that I am not getting enough of the white stuff.I have also had white flecks on my nails this week which would suggest this.
I am now wondering if my reflux problem is due to a lack of calcium. Apparently, this contributes to good muscle functioning (ie sphincter muscle).
If anybody is knowledgeable about calcium and could offer me any further info, I would be grateful. I haven't found much on the net.
I've stocked up on calcium supplements today anyway. Here's hoping!!!
I don't know about GERD, but I do know that taking 1200mg of Calcium a day has really kept my IBS under control......so I imagine that it might be helpful for the entire GI tract. Don't take too much though. And only 500mg of Calcium can be absorbed by the body at one time, so divide the doses up. I wouldn't take any more than 1,200. Also, it's important to take magnesium with calcium. I just buy some at the store, and take it right along with the calcium. Supposedly, you're supposed to take half as much magnesium as calcium........so I suppose that means for 1,200 mg of calcium, you should be taking 600 mg of magnesium. But magnesium can cause loose stools.....so start out at about 200-400mg a day, and see how it goes.
Thanks Cathy. I will give it a try though I guess it takes a while to get into the system? The supplements I have bought are 3x 267mg daily but supposedly give 99% rda.
Jowalker, I've got white spots on my nails, too. I've been blaming this on a zinc deficiency, and I've been blaming THAT on PPIs, since I've been losing my hair like crazy as well. I just don't think we absorb nutrients properly while on acid-blockers, so I've started supplementing with calcium, magnesium, zinc and B-12 -- and a few other things. The magnesium calms me down a lot and helps me sleep. Hope the cal/mag works for you.
