I recently learned the difference between an allergy and an intolerance and I thought I'd share...this is a pretty general resource but I found it helpful...hopefully someone on here will too - http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/02/27/earlyshow/saturday/main602681.shtml

My husband has environmental allergies. Sometimes, he mentions that his stomach is upset due to the post nasal drip from the allergies. On rare occasions, my stomach get upset from the post nasal drip as well.
Personally, I don't believe in food intolerance. Any food that caused an allergic reaction in the past is still problem for me.
In my case, I develop new allergies as time passes. Eventually, I won't be able to eat anything without taking Benadryl. The doctors do not have a clue. All I know is that I cannot avoid everything.
Next week, I am going to ask my doctor if food allergies can cause Chrons disease. I have the antibodies for Chron's but not the classic symptoms.

I have a 9 year old who has lots of stomach pain. We avoid anything with red dye and it seems to help.
I'm going through the same thing now. I am nauseated all the time with bloating and pain and running to the bathroom. I have had bloodwork and a cat scan and am scheduled to have a colonoscopy. I am now thinking it's caused by so much sinus drainage. When the drainage is bad, I am so sick. I think I need to see the allergist again. I was wondering if anyone here has used the electric irrigation system for the sinuses? I am thinking of ordering it to see if it helps.
I read something about that last night in a book called "No More Digestive Problems". The writer explained that when one is exposed to allergens, they can increase the activity and output of proton acid pumps of the stomach and that may be the cause of some pain in the stomach.
She recommended the use of the acid blockers such as Zantrac, Pepcid, Tagamet, Axid, or Prilosec.
Prilosec is now available in full strength over the counter and is a more potent acid-blocker that lasts for 24 hours. Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor and is safe to use indefinitely, according to Dr. Cynthia Yoshida, the author of "No More Digestive Problems". If symptoms continue beyond the use of this medication, she recommends that you need to see a doctor.

(My internist says that Prilosec has no effect on the hydrochloric acid of the stomach, so Prilosec isn't going to reduce hydrochloric acid there.)
It has helped me, and I hope it will help you, but always consult with your practitioner before making big changes in the way you manage your condition, because we aren't doctors and can tell you only that which has worked for us.

Long-term use of PPI's like Prilosec can cause nutritional deficiencies and small-bowel bacterial overgrowth. It is best to be taking a comprehensive multi-vitamin/mineral supplement and probiotics if you take a PPI.
PPIs, according to my internist, have no effects on the production of hydrochloric acid, which is the acid that affects vitamin breakdown and assimilation, as well as that of meats.
Pernicious anemia is the result of having insufficient hydrochloric acid and the inability to sufficiently break the protein so that the body can use the intrinsic factor to metabolize Vitamin B12 from

It's age or an inherited low level of hydrochloric acid productivity that can cause a lack of hydrochloric acid, and one physician recommends that all people over the age of 40 should be taking a hydrochloric acid supplement such as Betaine Hydrochloride.
I reiterate that my gastroenterologist and internist have both confirmed that taking PPIs does not affect the system negatively. Please publish your documented evidence that they do cause a vitamin deficiency.

The most common cause of small bowel bacteria buildup is slowing down of gastric motility (gastric paresis)in Diabetes. Xifaxan is the antibiotic most often prescribed to reduce the problem of excessive small intestine bacteria.
Even the most recent book I've read called "No More Digestive Problems" by Dr. Cynthia M. Yoshida, a Gastroenterologist, indicates that the PPIs are harmless and may provide significant relief for high levels of gastric acid production.

I will use proton pump inhibitors because they are beneficial and cause no problems for me. The best thing I did for myself was to stop the use of refined salt and moved to unrefined Himalayan salt in my diet which has many helpful benefits because of the minerals and large number of trace minerals necessary to the body, almost all of which are completely lacking in refined salt, except for potassium and in some cases iodine added to refined salt. Refined salt is not good for the human body or brain.

Hi everyone. First time poster.
This is related to a dull stomach ache that affected me for approximately 3-4 months about 4 years ago. To cut a long story short, I had all the tests done (blood tests, barium, gastro-endoscopy, colonoscopy, breath test, etc,.) and they found NOTHING. The final diagnosis was STRESS. With great pain and much frustration I had to accept this diagnosis. Each year on almost precisely the same date, the stomach ache returns, and last Saturday was no expection (almost exactly to the day as last year and the year before that). My initial thought was panic, then depression. I'm not sure I can go through another bout of this dull, energy-sapping constant ache day in, day out.
However - my question to anyone who can please help is this. At the same time each year my pollen allergies begin, and I only noticed this connection this time. about 2 months ago my allergies began again and at the moment the usual runny nose and itchy eyes are in full effect. Since then they have got better and I've stopped taking anti-histamines. Is there ANY CHANCE that my allergies could be causing my stomach ache??
I just returned from my allergy Doctor and he said it was very unlikely, but he was in a rotten mood and didn't feel like saying much at all.
Is there someone, anyone out there who can help.
Thank you soo much for reading.

HI, First time poster. I began having sudden terrible stomach aches and nausea two years ago August. It felt like food poisoning. If I had just eaten I would vomit. But it also came without warning when I hadn't eaten for hours. Many tests later the doctors, who all agreed it must be gastric, could find nothing wrong. The problems gradually declined over the winter but returned the following September, and were much worse. It occurred to me to see my allergist/immunologist after realizing the first trouble began when I was weaning myself off GABApenton which he had diagnosed previously for recurring vertigo. Once the vertigo was cleared up I had gone off the medication. After hearing what was wrong, He said the two were related and that I had Chronic Oelvic Pain Syndrome which can have various causes. Since I had already had a Oelvic exam and ultra sound, CT scan, colonoscopy, blood tests, etc. and that the problems began as I was coming off the GABApentin, the most likely cause was an allergic type of reaction to something airborn. GABApentin represses the production of various enzymes, one of which reacts to the ingestion of parasites. When the parasite is sensed, the enzyme causes histamine and prostaglandin to be release into the stomach walls. The resulting inflammation and cramping are the body's attempt to dislodge the parasite, which of course in my case hadn't actually been ingested at all. I was just reacting to something blooming out in the woods. He put me back on the medication which successfully stopped the stomach attacks but caused depression. We then tried Baclafin which stopped the stomach attacks but caused headaches. The solution has been a low dose of GABApentin (300 mg twice a day) plus a prescription dose of Prilosec twice a day and a supplement called GABA ( not the prescription drug). I have been able to go off the GABApentin for extended periods but have just gone back on following major attack just yesterday, July 30. Whatever it is, it's blooming early this year. As a child, I suffered from many allergies and took shots for years. This past year, with the stomach troubles my doctor tested me for the most likely airborn allergens but was not able to determine exactly what it is out there that causes this. Still, I am better and the problem seems to be controllable. For anyone experiencing this sort of issue, I wish you the best and hope that the medications I have mentioned here will work for you. GABApentin, by the way also stops the post nasal drip problem, or did at least for me.

Please separate your paragraphs so we can read them, as some readers have vision problems.
Please also check the spelling of your pain syndrome. I could not find anything called "Oelvic" pain syndrome. Is it pelvic?

Yes, allergies cause stomach and belly pain. I moved to Florida from north, developed allergies and asthma within 2 -3 years and bad stomach aches. My advise is move back if you can. Florida is not for everybody!
