I don't know if I am allergic to turkey. Since my problems with chicken i have never ate turkey I am too affraid because I don't know what is the reason of my chicken allergy (the bird or what the bird eat).
I can eat eggs, I can eat glutten also. The only other allergy I had was tomato when I was a baby, but I can eat tomato each week now and have no problem with.
I am affraid to be allergic to something that chicken eat or medical treatments. Does allergy test can detect if its an allergy to injections or something?
I've gone in for allergy testing along with both my son and daughter several years ago...I know they can check a lot more things now - I would at least make a call to them and ask? - that wouldn't hurt.
I would strongly yeah suggest that you stay away from chicken!!
yes I stay away from chicken. But many peoples (friends and familly) think that I am not allergic, they think that I invented that just for fun! :-((
They think that because I already ate some chicken that i am not allergic. But I don't know what to tell them, I don't understand myself whats the problem!
And its very hard here in quebec state to have an appointment with an allergist. I will try to have one but it can be very long and often they only take people with serious allergy like peanut butter or stuff like that.
A last stupid question. Is it possible to make an allergic test at home? I have seen this in a movie, the guy have scratch his arm and put the chicken on the scratch to see if it will be swollen and red. (in the movie the guy tought his girlfriend wanted to kill him with his allergic).
Do you know where to find all the research of this link? (http://www.food-allergens.de/symposium-3-4/chicken/chicken-allergens.htm) it cost a lot to view the other pages!!!
My son says that his throat hurts when he eats chicken...only after he swallows it. We think it is in his head, but after reading some of your comments I am thinking it might be allergies. He doesn't get hives for rashes...what do you think?
Hi jomolstad, welcome to Healingwell. How old is your son? My daughter used to say she couldn't swallow certain foods but I think for her, it was her way of getting out of eating stuff that was good for her. Because she eats the same foods now with no problems. This was when she was younger around 5 or 6. If your son is older then I would listen to him and get him tested for allergies. Well either way, you should get him tested. Allergies don't always manifest themself thru hive or rashes. You can have various symptoms such as itchy throat, eyes or sinuses to more severe complications such as anaphalxis (sp?) shock.
thanks for the information Sherry...he is 10 and has been saying the same thing for about 3 years. I used to think it was in his head, but now I am wondering if it really is allergies. I will call my doctor and see what type of tests they can do....
I too am allergic to poultry.( eggs and dairy also ) Why are poultry allergies so unheard of by the "general" public? When I list my allergies the dairy and eggs don't really get odd looks, but when I say I can't have chicken, turkey or other poultry I get the oddest looks. I am grateful that in the past 5 yrs food allergies are becoming more well known, but until I found this web site I was actually beginning to think I was the only one allergic to poulty.
Also, as someone who has always been allergic, I don't understand the need for people to continue to try foods that they know make them ill, also knowing each time you are exposed to something you are allergic too you are taking a huge risk of a major attack. Would I love to have chicken wings with my husband while watching football, eat thanksgiving turkey, or have a huge brownie with ice cream? OF COURSE I would, but my health is worth more than eating these foods. Perhaps it's harder when these allergies come later in life and you actually know what you are missing, but I don't think food should be so important that one is willing to risk their health. I don't mean to preach, I am just curious.
Welcome aboard jomolstad. When i fist started having my reactions (around age 10 or so), my parents didn't believe me either. Same thing, they just thought I didn't like chicken. It wasn't until I started getting red spots on my face and neck that they started believing me. I never went in for formal tested, I already knew I could eat poultry anymore. I would most definitely restrict your son from eating any more until you can get into an allergist. From what I've read from others (and myself) it can become worse as he gets older. Although many of us have different reactions it seems swelling of the throat is somewhat a common thread. If he suffers from anything throat related, it can become very serious.
Hi, I too have a reaction when I eat poultry. I like the others thought I was the only one. No one in my family has this problem. I realized it was chicken when I was in my 20's. I recall have numerous stomach aches as a child and back then in the 60's you didn't have allergies or such disorders, Its good to see there is a bit more out there. I have often thought that maybe I had something wrong that caused me to not be able to digest chicken, eggs etc. My symptoms start about 2-4 hours after I eat chicken. I get a terrible stomach ache and then start throwing up. Once I do that I am pretty much ok. Just feel a bit weakened for the rest of the day. If anyone has any more info out there it woud be great to read it.
I am very allergic to chicken. After quite sometime of suffering from severe exzema I went to see an allergist/internist. Behold it was the chicken. Chicken alone. I do not react to eggs or turkey. My doctor has told me that it is more common than some may think. If others are suffering I suggest playing with the idea of chicken being the cause. What can it hurt to check it out? From what I know not all allergist are internists but most internests are allergists. I figured I would kill two birds with one stone and went to the right doctor. I highly suggest. I have saved myself alot of pain and suffering.
Wow... like everyone else, I'm pretty surprised to see that others have some of the same problems I do...
I started having reactions to certain foods when I was about 19... by the time I was 20, I had figured out that it was poultry meat that was causing the problem (I'm 30 now, which means it's been ten years since I've eaten a chicken dinner or had turkey on Thanksgiving...!). I get bloating/cramping in the stomach (BAD bellyache), which later moves to tightness in the chest, sweating profusely, and general misery. To my knowledge, there isn't really anything I can do but wait it out... if it's really bad, it'll make me throw up... but normally it's just a half-hour to an hour of being miserable, and it goes away.
I get the reaction from meat... chicken and turkey both do it. Sometimes if there's chicken stock in something I eat, I'll get a really mild case of it, but not every time. Eggs, milk, etc. are no problem. However, I also get the same reaction from brown beans (refried beans, BBQ baked beans, etc.)... seems unrelated, but it's exactly the same result...
Like most of the others, people are pretty surprised to hear about this... most don't say outright that they don't believe me, they just think it's very strange (and I agree... it is!). But, it's really a pain checking every can of soup, sauce, etc. to see if it's got chicken stock in it. And don't get me started on going to weddings...
Anyway, I've been to a couple of doctors, and none have ever heard of such a thing... so basically, all I've got at this point is "just live with it," which means no poultry meat for me. So if anybody's got any ideas/theories/proven ways to get around this thing... I'm all ears...
Like you, my poultry allergy started at 19 aswell! I am now 24. Mine also started with the BAD cramps and fast heart rate and a bit of trouble breathing. After the first time I ended up in the ER I was told to go to an allergist ASAP. I did, and was diagnoised with fowl and fish anaphylaxis. Your symptoms sound like they are getting a bit severe. Please go see an allergist. Also start keeping a food diary.. write down EVERYTHING you eat, drink, put in your mouth... write down the times and if you have a reaction right down ALL your symptoms, what time it started etc.
Also, if you feel a reaction is getting to out of hand, ex. not able to breathe right, swelling etc. do not hesitate to go to the ER!!
But, make sure you find an allergist!! and if they never heard of a chicken allergy, find another one!! The allergist should be able to tell you if it is a true allergy or an intolerance!
Very interesting forum. My sister had food allergies (chicken), and I am allergic to ketchup and never had chicken in my life. Recently, I accidentaly ate turkey and had no side effects at all. Does that equal eating chicken as well? What do you guys think?
I am now keeping away from chicken, but would like to know if I can eat it. What kind of tests could show if I'm ok or not? If I am to try to eat a small piece at home, what kind of preventive medication should I have? Adrenaline?
Usually you only have to worry about food allergies if you reacted to the food previously. I am the only one in my family who is allergic to chicken. Everyone still eats chicken and turkey when they are at restraunts. If you are really worried talk with an allergist or your doctor.
FWIW Tyson chicken a few years ago told me that they didn't give their chickens hormones. They said it would add more costs than it was worth. Then I asked them what they fed their chickens and they wouldn't tell me. It could be antibiotics that cause allergies. It could be anything. I think if you find a food that causes you problems you should stop eating it.
I also Have an allergy from eating chicken. I get really bad stomach/back cramps, Throwing up, Saliva get very think, . I could never find anyone that would try an diagnose it so I decided to try some things to see my reactions. A few other of my state and allergies: - I Have very prominent asthma and sinus allergies. - I also have the common shellfish allergy - The same Reaction I get from the chicken, I also get from Canned Fish such as canned tuna, Sardines, ect.., But I am very able to eat fresh fish such as tuna filets. (this started my search/ experimenting on Preservatives, Antibiotics and growth hormones in poultry.) I was recently in haiti and while there decided to try some chicken, knowing for sure that the chicken was not fed any anti-biotics or growth hormones. In Fact I caught and killed the thing. So being the first time I ate Fried Chicken in more than a decade, I ate almost the whole thing. Low and Behold..... Absoulutely NO Reaction. When I returned to the states after a couple weeks, just to make sure that my allergy was still prominent, I bought a cooking chicken (Tysons) fried it up, Got sicker than a dog. Same symptoms, cramps, throwing up, severe pains in my back.
So after a couple weeks decided to try and torture my self again for the sake of science. I found a reputable "free range" chicken supplier. Those chickens are quiet expensive in comparison to the normal cooking chicken. Well guess what. Absoulutly no allergic reaction. But BE AWARE, that even though some places claim to be free range, They still feed them antibiotics and hormones.
its is actually the same for me i cannot eat seafoods, eggs, chicken and canned foods. Everyone thinks that i am koking :(... and some people dont take it well like thy say i have personnal issues against them or no confidence in what they cook. OHHH.. sometimes this really frustrates ma not to be undertood
Just to clear up some things. Some people are not allergic to the antibiotics or things they put into chickens (they do the same with beef). It is the chicken meat itself.
What you guys are describing almost sounds like an intolerance. Going to an Allergist would be the best bet.
As well, do not suggest people to try free range chicken, allergies can be severe. If someone is anaphylactic to chicken and goes try a free range chicken they can die. Again about the antibiotics, what people are allergic to is a protien! That protein is in the meat!
If you are allergic to chicken, stay away from it! Do not try and test your self. Thats just silly.
Then if It is not the antibiotics or the growth hormones, do you know why I received no reaction when eating the Non-processed affected chicken compared to the standard cooking chicken? (FireMT)
Thats for an allergist to determine, but what I was saying is, when people say they are allergic to chicken it is the CHICKEN, not antibiotics... if they were allergic to antibiotics, then the allergist would tell them what to stay away from. And, I also said it may be an intolerance, which is different than an allergy. Allergist or immunologist would be your best bet, to figure out why that happens.
I just know from experience. When I was first diagnosed with the chicken allergy I was stupid and tried the free range too.. thinking it was something in the chicken.. nope... I ended up in the hospital that night with my throat closing and going unconcious.
