Hi Missie,
I have IBS also........whatever that is! I have Fibromyalgia too........whatever that is!
about a year ago, I started taking calcium, and it helped alot with bloating, for some reason.
Today, out of the blue, I filled up with air and thought I would explode. I burped and burped and burped. The only thing I can think of is that I took a decongestant. Or.....I'm coming off my beta blocker. Neither possibility makes any sense to me. I guess we have to look at what we ate....but for me, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Sometimes, I think it's a matter of biochemistry or neurochemistry or something, which can't always control.
Sometimes, I think when we burp alot, we actually are swallowing the air and burping it back up, which makes us FEEL like we're relieving the pressure.....but we're not. It's sort of an illusion.
Sometimes it helps me to take Gas X during these episodes. Wish I had more help for you.
I think it's real possible that the antibiotic did a real number on you.....so eat yogurt and take probiotics, and cut your carbs down. Maybe even eat very little for a day or 2. Good luck. I know how miserable this can make you!

Hopefully your bowels will even out again.
I had to stop my calclium for a few days, to have a bone density test, and I don't know if that's what caused it, but I'm burping myself silly too!! I blow up like a balloon, and burp, burp, burp. And they aren't small little burps! It's hard to believe a person can have that much gas in there! My stomach and abdomen feel soooooooo worn out after they blow up so big. Does your's feel that way too?

Thanks for providing some details about your situation. Sorry you are in a bit of a funk lately. I am curious about why you cut out all meats. My research indicates that cutting carbs, not proteins and fats is the key to eliminating gas bloating and GERD symptoms. Several people with IBS are also reporting encouraging results using this approach as well. The concept is that when you digest more carbs (especially starch, which is actually worse than the chocolate) than you can digest and absorb, the unabsorbed carbs feed intestinal microorganisms causing excess gas production and bacterial overgrowth. One recent study showed that 85% of IBS sufferers showed signs of significant bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. I have a theory that this gas produced from too many carbs drives reflux and other intestinal symptoms.
All the best,

My research includes reference to reports by medical doctors with many years of experience treating patients suffering from heartburn with controlled carb diets. Doctors like Michael and Mary Dan Eades and Dr. Atkins. My research also points to peer review journal articles that show that carbohydrates that are not absorbed in our intestines result in intestinal gas production, increased reflux and increased symptoms. I cite other reports supporting my theory that inhibiting gut microbes will also reduce reflux. I also make reference to studies showing that reflux was reduced in infants when the amount of dextrose (glucose) was reduced in their formula. My research also cites the clinical study by Yancy et.al. showing that reflux was dramatically reduced by controlling carbohydrate consumption despite the continued ingestion of classic trigger foods like coffee and trigger behaviors like smoking. Based on current reseach, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases stated "The committee is aware of new research which inticates a controlled carbohydrate diet may dramatically reduce the incidence of gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn)". That is a direct quote from a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) whose focus includes digestive diseases.

What about people who have IBS-D?? I'm on Heather's Diet for IBS which is a WHOLE LOTTA carbs!! I eat tons of bagels, flour tortillas, mostly soluble fiber foods. I have control of the IBS now but my GERD is still kinda bad. I have been on Nexium for 4 months and it has helped alot but I'm still having symptoms......I also have a hiatal hernia. The doctor tells me that's why I'm still having problems. If I eat a lot of protein and veggies my IBS seems to be out of control, which upsets my reflux as well. I'm on Primal Defense and Activia for Probiotics and that has helped alot, too! But, like Saltine Crackers really set off my reflux. The salt on the top of the crackers literally burns my throat, especially THIS morning.
Thanks!
Michelle :)
Question for you: If I get reflux immediately after eating certain things, does that mean that what I have eaten has triggered it, or does that mean that my system is already overloaded, and that's why it happens so immediately? If it were because it was already overloaded, you'd think I wouldn't get alot of gas and reflux, until I started digesting it further down. Thanks.
Over eating can lead to stomach distention and cause reflux directly. If you add gas pressure from previous meals, that will add to the reflux potential. Also the gas pressure is coming from the intestines so it may push partially digested food and acid into the esophagus without you actually feeling the gas in the form of belching. I also wonder if some foods can immediately cause some gas upon entering the stomach. Basic (low acidity) things like bicarb immediately mix with stomach acid releasing carbon dioxide. Soda as well (even though acidic) can release carbon dioxide as well. Typically this gas, that’s formed immediately, causes belching, and not reflux as much, because the gas is formed in the upper part of the stomach.

I have heard people say that soluable fiber is good for their IBS. I believe the high starch carbs are bad for both IBS and GERD. Low carb veggies with higher protiens and fats would be my recommentation. This is just my opinion. Always check with your doctor.

Hi,
I just joined this forum to search for clues about my chronic burping. I had my gall bladder removed a year ago and have been burping many times a day ever since. Before it was removed I also had some burping during gall bladder attacks. I have continuing burping symptoms and sometimes a little gas pressure in my chest. My doctors are telling me to watch my diet, but that doesn't seem to be helping, although coffee does seem to trigger increased burping. Anti-gas, antacid treatments, and motility drugs have not helped. I also had urgent stools after the gall bladder was out, but the Questran seems to have bound up the excess bile acid in my intestines OK. Some doctors have suggested I am swallowing air but I don't think so.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

All meds have that risk / benefit aspect that we need to evaluate. I know it's hit or miss sometimes, especially multiple symptoms that we are trying to address. I am not an MD or a phamacist and can't advise you on your meds. I can only provide support and share some things I have learned and experienced around intestinal problems due to bacterial overgrowth. How do you know you have an overgrowth of yeast?
Wishing you well,
