COULD THIS HAVE BEEN A BLOCKAGE?

Last night my partner, woke up with terrible pain in his abdominal area, after about 5 minutes it went,then about ever hour through the night the pain would come for a few minutes and go and then return again[probably spasms]. In the morning he changed his bag and three hours later it was still empty, he went to our local Health Centre and was given a suppository in his stoma and was told it was more likely to be inflamation of the stoma than a blockage.After he was given the suppository, his stoma started to work an hour or so later. Was this a blockage or not do you think?

It certainly sounds like it was,especialy as your partner had no output for quite a while. Does he have an Ileostomy or Colostomy? I was under the impression that with an Ileo especialy,that suppositorys should never be used. I think the main reason is because of the danger of dehydration. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Just to let you know that the blockage was caused by adhesions and he is now in hospital.

I was in the hospital for eight days last month for a partial bowel obsturction. Mine is caused from adhesions also. I get them frequently and have been hospitalized four times so far. But, there are times I can work it out too. Yes, you have the pain and nothing, or nearly nothing, goes in the pouch. I don't head to the hospital until vomiting sets it. BUT you need to stay on clear liquids only. Don't eat food. That just packs things more...like a stopped up drain. Also, try purple grape juice. I has helped me numerous times. Also hot tea. Hot showers help relax you and sometimes that works along with massaging the area. Watch a movie or get on the computer...anything to get your mind off of what is going on. That can sometimes cause you to relax and things start moving again. I try all of this and, if vomiting occurs and nothng is coming in the pouch, I head to the hospital.

Thanks Sherrine, my partner had to be operated on yesterday, the adhesions had caused an acute blockage, so once again he had an op and will be in ITU for a few days. Fingers crossed that will be it this time. Things started off in June 05 when he had Salmonella, which trigged of UC, then had C Difficle which led to his first surgery in September 05, this all in the space of 4 months, now this.
