I heard a doctor say that depression is a choice and not a condition. I wonder if people who are depressed just have to say "Well, there's no point in being depressed so I'm going to stop now."
But I've been mildly depressed almost my whole life; the depression is familiar to me and I can't totally leave it behind.
the doc obviously never suffered from depression. find a new doctor
Hi Richard. What a bunch of horsepucky. Like somebody would choose to feel this way. I believe it's a proven fact that depression sufferers lack adequate seratonin. I too know people that have never suffered depression and I guess it just goes with the saying "until you walk a mile in my shoes..."

Yah right, like we wouldn't feel better if we could. The only shrink my parents ever sent me to was like that.

I suggest you spread this "Doctor's" name around. Have his credentials examined, and see if he isn't a "quack". What school of medicine did he get his diploma from ?
There are many preaching things they no nothing about, and claiming to be medical professionals.
I don,t think he is a qualified medical person. If he is, I sure wish he would pass along his magic to me.

I wish it were a choice!
But sadly, I find that no matter what I want, it's not something I can change without treatment.

Honestly, for a long time, I felt the same way - I thought, "I can beat this without help". So I went med-free, therapy-free for years. I was successful in the aspect of not committing suicide, but I was still depressed, and I just became a nasty person because I was trying to keep everything under control.
I found that the only thing that truly helped me was medication, coupled with some group therapy (Depression Anonymous) & more religious activity. Trying to go it alone, or even with the help of a therapist alone was not enough.
Some people probably can walk away from depression. If that works for them, then I say great! More power to you! But to make a generalization that everyone could walk away is like a slap in the face. Everyone is different and I think that's insulting for anyone to insinuate that this is a "false" disease.
I've been depressed for more than half of my life - I occasionally do get into a funk that I can "snap out of", but I also understand the difference between that type of depression and the severe clinical depression that causes me to just want to curl up and cry all day long.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents...
