Everyone, please be careful with this parasite. Not only do we have to deal with Colitis, but now we have to deal with this.
Be careful of bagged salads, berries, etc. Wash everything really good.

It keeps spreading to more states. Makes me wonder where it's coming from that is common. Maybe fertilizer?
I read yesterday that the lower risk fresh fruits are those with thick peels or shells like bananas and melons, but even with washing them well there is no guarantee.
Berries are among the highest risk because even with washing well, they have no outer peal so the parasite can be deeper.

I think for me, I'm going to stick to frozen veggies, bananas, melons.
I usually eat a salad every day but I'm nervous. I never get bagged salad anyway and usually go to the farmers market but where are they getting the produce from?

If anyone bought salad that is labeled "Taylor Farms", throw it out. That's the source of this outbreak.

I read that it was iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, but I don't think I would trust any vegetable from Taylor Farms right now.

Now it sounds like it they don't really know where it came from and it's still spreading

Im suspecting some of the spreading is through people and bathroom hygiene... hand to mouth. Toilets flushed with lid up, on walls, door handles, cell phones. Count the ways.

Thanks for starting the post about this topic, Michele. I've been bugged by periodontal issues, but try to access the forum at least weekly to catch up on UC developments.*** So far I'm ok buyng blueberries at our local farmers' market, where that produce is grown seasonally upstate in NY; of course I wash them very carefully before eating. My gut dislikes raspberries & strawberries so I've long avoided them, and they reportedly are more prone to the cyclospora given their rough yet thin surfaces. For CCinPA especially: my mother had told me yrs back that her generation in PA always immersed fresh berries in cool salted water briefly-- to drown any tiny mobile critters that might accompany them on transport from farm or field. She was surprised to hear that I just used plain water to clean berries! Too bad this cyclospora had to pop up during summer when people are more likely to prefer eating salads to cooked veggies. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission pursuing periodontal problems)
