Hi everyone,Im having my right breast removed on thursday Aug.18.Left one was removed in march.I was wondering ,how do they check for masses and lumps if you have no breasts?Oh and i finished chemo treatments two weeks ago(so happy) Tammy
Tammy, good luck with surgery on Thursday! You'll do great, and you already know what to expect - half the battle. Also, congratulations on finishing chemo! That's fabulous and I'm really happy that's behind you!
I don't know how they check us for masses and lumps post-mastectomy. I had a bi-lat and my surgeon said not to return for 6 months. I would assume ultrasound would be the best way, since there is no breast tissue to "bench press."

You continue to do monthly self-exams where they used to be. There could be something there. My scans are only done once a year now. When they were more frequent, I didn't know I was supposed to be doing the self-exams. I know it sounds like a nutty thing to do, but you're checking to see if there is a lump or mass come up anywhere.

Tammy- i check myself, but of course there is nothing for a mammo. I like my flat chest now, took some getting used to, but when you think of as 'cancer-laden-appendages' it helps alot! ;-)

Good luck with the surgery. I will be thinking about you and hoping all goes well. My sister just asked me the same question and I told her exactly what Jo-Ann said. Self exams and ultrasound if there is something suspicious.
