GERD 99% gone

Hi all,
I just wanted to write a bit about my experience with GERD to give you all some hope.

Last summer, I was having stomach and chest pain all day, every day, no matter what I ate. I was treated for H.pylori and didn't notice any difference. Gave up coffee, alcohol, and carbonated beverages. Also gave up chocolate and mint, at the doctor's recommendation. I tried Nexium for a while, but it didn't do much more than possibly take the edge off. Different diets (such as low carb, non-dairy, no wheat - everything I could try) didn't help either. I kept a food diary for several months.

I had resigned myself to living with it when it gradually started getting better, as mysteriously as it had begun. The only two reasons that I could think were

1. The H.pylori treatment had done the trick, it just took a long time (more than 6 months) for my stomach and GI tract to heal.
-or
2. I noticed I felt gradually better after stopping taking birth control pills (It's been 6 months now). I'm 30 years old and had been on the pill for about 6 years.

At any rate, I can drink coffee and alcohol in moderation now, and eat anything as long as I don't overeat. I don't know why I feel so much better now, but I wanted to give you all hope because I know how miserable GERD can make you feel.

Best of luck to all,
Allie

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. I'm very happy for you, and hope you continue to do well. It's so important for us to hear that GERD is not necessarily a life-long condition, as some of our doctors (mine anyway) would have us believe. Most of the posts here are from people still struggling. Yours was a ray of sunshine.

Bingo! Birth control pills. I really think that was it. When I was on HRT, it was awful......but fortunately controlled by aciphex. When I got off the HRT.....I didn't need the aciphex any more! Plus.....I think the funky hormones fluctuations during perimenopause can cause GERD symptoms too. I'm glad you're doing better!
Interesting to read the perimenopausal symptoms can cause GERD symptoms. I've been perimenopausal for about 2 years now and have been experiencing worsening GERD symptoms. Glad to hear it.
Hi! How is your heartburn now? Did you ever find out if it was the birth control or the h.pylori?
