Are GLP1s helpful with ulcerative colitis?

My GI said that he has several IBD patients on Wegovy now and that their inflammation markers have gone down more.

He did say there is a learning curve in differentiating between Wegovy "eating something you should not" symptoms and UC or Crohns symptoms. I start the pills next week. I'll update when I figure out if anything has changed....but the pills supposedly take longer to build up in your system.

Any updates on how they work? I am thinking about trying them if the price goes down. My PCP has no objections but wants to wait til after my next scope since GI issues are common. Would love to know how other IBDers fare on those meds.

I talked with my GI yesterday before the scope and he said he has several patients on GLP-1s and none of them have had any UC flares while on them. He did say that 1 patient had to stop due to side effects (he didn't elaborate). He said no studies have been done with IBD patients to know exactly how safe they are for us, but anecdotally based on his patients he has no concerns with me trying them.

I saw a commercial on TV that Medicare will cover Zepbound starting in July (I think there are some other GLP-1s covered also). I'm leaning towards that since I have a niece who had great success with it.

Apparently it’s a special program with Medicare to get $50/month and I don’t qualify since I was diagnosed with diabetes after high doses of steroids years ago. I manage it with diet so I don’t needs meds for diabetes, but since my A1C runs higher than normal doc can’t remove the diabetes label. Medicare said I need to use regular diabetes meds through Part D and they are too expensive – and I don’t needs meds for diabetes anyway.

I wanted the GLP-1 for weight loss and the price is several hundred $$/month through Ro plus Ro’s monthly fee. Guess it’s not meant to be.

I was wondering this about GLPs for UCers because my stepdad is on one and complains of constipation. I had heard this before so I had thought maybe…

However, I don’t have a good opinion of these drugs and would likely not go on one myself, but I always wonder about things that slow the system down for those of us prone to having to make a run for the bathroom whether IBD related or not. :thinking:

Sorry for delay. I didnt get to go on Wegovy. Its still in the future but I had an “oh no” moment.

Opthamologist has been working with me over the last 10 years due to methotrexate. He said I had cataracts, and I also have map dot dystrophy which can cause vision problems. Before we could do cataract surgery I needed a lamellar keratectomy to remove the scar tissue and cloudy areas. The opthamologist said no Wegovy until after eye heals from surgery. We would do one eye, wait a couple of months and then do the other eye…then we would progress to cataract surgery 12 months after I healed from the 2nd eye surgery.

My eye surgery and healing did not go as planned. We haven’t even gotten to the second eye yet. During my last visit he said he is unsure if we should even consider touching my other eye. Wegovy is on hold… I did go see a different specialist and he recommended waiting to see how my eye heals and no to Wegovy.

Silver lining…Im still trying to see it… lol.

oh no, Clo! That sounds horrible. I am beginning to think that someone put a curse on you! You have had to deal with so much. Hope your eye problems can be dealt with quickly.
