Hi all,
Is it normal to still feel like going to the loo thru the anus. I have an ileostomy and that was done in Oct 2004.

If your rectum was removed, you may experience
phantom pain; that is, a sensation
of wanting to have a bowel movement
through the rectum. This sensation is similar
to the feeling amputees have after losing
a limb. The feeling occurs because the
nerves remain intact and still interpret
messages from the missing part. This feeling
tends to decrease over time.

If the rectum remains intact, you may still
experience the urge to move your bowels.
You can sit on the commode, and you may
pass mucus. If the anal sphincter muscles
are weak, mucus may leak out. A thin protective
pad may be worn to protect your
clothing.

Thank you for your reply. No I have not had my rectum removed, so I suppose it will be ok that I feel like this. I have on ocassions passed mucus, but still feel like going and nothing happens, just s feeling of wanting to poop. Thank you so much for the information.

Hi guys!
I had surgery in November of 04, and i have my 3-month check next wed, the 15th. I have had STRONG urgency, especially in the beginning, and i did actually lose it in my pants twice, but the surgeon was actually pleased. He said the more mucous you pass teh better, and the feeling of having to go is good, since it reflects the health of the pouch and the strength of your muscles, and means you will be continent at reconnection!!! so take hope. I actually do pass more than mucous out my anus, apparently every once in a while some stuff can get past your ostomy and go right on through when you are awaiting reconnection...it doesnt hurt, but when i do pass, it looks like what has come out my bag...quite interesting. Anyway, the feeling to poop stinks right, but i dont have pain anymore, and i can pretty much pass mucous/stool on command these days...about 6-8 times per day! Whew!!!

Thanks for that, now I know that it is ok to feel and actually go thru the rectum. Thanks Eileen for the advise, I do feel alot better now. I am going for my check up and pre reconnection advice on 22nd. I am glad you feel good. Keep being so positive and helpful.
