Hey everyone,
I just wanted to let everyone know that I heard some very exciting news at a recent CME class that I was involved in. The CME class was based on therapies currently in development for the treatment of various CNS disorders. Evidently, the moderator told us that 1 of the pharmaceutical companies has identified a specific pathway that they believe induces TSLERs (the major reason why GERD happens) it's new drug class would be called - Metabotropic glutamate receptors subtype 5 (mGluR5) which would be G-protein-coupled receptors activated by glutamate, the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian nervous system. This has a broad range of possibilities in treatment from anxiety disorders to GERD. As I sat there, I could not help to wonder how much GERD is induced by anxiety/depression or some other concommitant mental problem?
Great news, I think ... let's hope it pans out!
Hope that this finds everyone well ...
best,

ckgMD,
This sounds rather interesting! I believe that GERD is induced by anxiety/depression, but also believe that GERD induces anxiety/depression/panic in many sufferers.
Just a thought!

Hi Vanessa
I would agree with that!
Hi,
I am back. I would agree with Vanessa's second sentence.
Norm!
If that's the case, will valium and/or prozac cure GERD?
Hi,
Actually, I meant Vanessa's third sentance - GERD can result in anxiety, etc. On controlled carb you can have all the stress "the man" can through at you. It doesn't seem to matter.

I'd be a 'doubting Thomas on that one! :) It may help some, but I am currently being treated for depression, which has been brought on by my medical issues. And I've never noticed a difference. I am but one person, but I would love to hear from others whether they believe their GERD was brought on by depression and if they're on an antidepressant and are now cured?

Hi everyone, I wouldn't say my GERD was brought on by depression, but I do think anxiety caused it. I never had a problem with any gastric issues, only normal heartburn while pregnant, until I began having panic attacks and anxiety issues. Then I began having GERD symptoms, it HAS to be related... I mean how unlucky can someone be to have panic attacks visited on them and then separately develop GERD? So far, my GERD has been nice to me lately. Nothing major. BUT, my anxiety level is down also, the higher it gets the more symptoms I get. I also wonder if muscle tension throughout the abdomen doesn't bring on symptoms, if you are tensing around your stomach area, wouldn't that cause reflux? Just a thought.

When you have a handful of lemons, you have a choice. Suck on them, and be bitter.... or stomp on them and add sugar and enjoy them.
I have no medical training, any medical opinions expressed in my posts are just that....opinions.
Hi
My gerd began when I was doing my PhD--the most stressed I've ever been in my life. This followed on from the death of both my parents, in quick succession, both terminally ill.
My anxiety/panic is due to pain, and I am taking Zoloft 50mg@d. I haven't noticed any significant improvements w/GERD as a result of taking anti-depressant meds.
Sarah, I think you might be on to something with abdominal muscle tension & reflux.
Jocaste, sorry to hear about your parents.

That is good news but will it do anything for those of us that already have had GERD advance to Barretts Esophagus?
L.J. Hi and Welcome to HealingWell!!
I just saw this post and see that you've mentioned Barrett's esophagus? I have that as well. :( I have a hiatal hernia that plays a big role in my gastric reflux which is a physical problem. So I dont know for sure how diets, or antidepressants or any of that would help. Of course, that is just my viewpoint. I can definitely tell you that certain foods hurt my digestive system and I do try to watch those, along with eating a low carb diet and I still have problems occassionally.
Wishing you the best!!
