H pylori

I'm new to the board & on the hunt for info.  I've had increasing difficulty w/swallowing for more than 5 years with the feeling that something was stuck in my throat.  When I originally saw a physician about this, she could find nothing wrong, checked my thyroid and referred me to an ENT.  ENT did a scope (up the nose & down the throat) and couldn't find any reason for my difficulties.  The referring physician asked me if "there is anything in your life that you find hard to swallow?"  Realizing that they thought I was whack, I didn't follow up on my symptoms again until about a month ago... it's been years.
 
This time the same ENT said my esophagus was inflammed and the cartilage behind my larynx was eroded, etc., and she suspected reflux.  2 weeks of treatment didn't change anything so she ordered a CT of my neck/throat... which was negative.  In the meantime, my general physician did some blood work to check my thyroid (negative).  Phyisican's office phoned me today and said I tested positive for H Pylori and referred me to a GI.  I have an appt. tomorrow.
 
Of course I hit the web to find out "what is H Pylori".  I understand what it is and it sounds like this could be why I've had this feeling in my throat all these years.
 
Has anybody been down this road?

I've been there myself, so I understand a little of what you are going through.  You seem to be up on H Pylori bacteria, have you also read about GERD and Barrett's? 
 
I have GERD, a hiatal hernia along with Barrett's esophagus.  Please check back here and let me know what happens, okay?!

I just came in from my GI appointment.  He said he was "sure" H Pylori didn't have anything to do with the problem w/my throat.  I'm having a swallowing xray next week... I forget what the 'real' name of the test is and endoscopy in a couple of weeks.

He gave me a long list of possibilities... some of them weren't good at all.  He leans toward some sort of damage or stricture to blah, blah, blah caused by reflux/GERD disease.  If it's what he suspects, the xray will probably reveal it and he will stretch 'it' during the endoscopy procedure.

I have a little reading to do.  :-) We'll see.

Thanks for your reply; I had read the link you mentioned.  If you or anyone else has any other ideas, I'm open.

Zeri, I'm sorry you didn't get more answers to your question. sad It seems that this being a holiday weekend, many have left early and we probably won't hear from them til Tues. or so. yeah

I had to have a Barium Swallow done.  They had me drink some barium and lay down on a table while they x-rayed my lovely barium drink go from the mouth to the stomach. yeah So while it wasn't a bad drink, I wouldn't recommend it for parties! :)

That test showed that I had a hiatal hernia and reflux.  So then they scheduled the endoscopy.  They have you lie down and they spray your throat with something that tastes worse than Chloroseptic Spray-but still not completely unbearable.  You are given med.'s that allow you to sleep while they insert a tube into your mouth and down into the stomach.  They actually did a biopsy of my gallbladder at the time, because that was on it's way out... :)  The next thing I knew I was awake and being wheeled by a wheelchair into the cubicle where my Husband waited.

They have tried me on a few med.s' and while they did work for long periods of time, eventually I had to try different combinations.  I'm now on Aciphex and Rantitidine (Zantac) every morning and have been doing pretty good.

Thanks for your reply.  The xray I'm having Tuesday involved swallowing a pill of some sort and then drinking water while they xray me swallowing.  Then I drink something a little thicker, and then thicker still and so on.  It's not the barium swallow... I forget what they called it.  Anyway, another test.  Oh, well.

It's certainly an upper GI test, but it had a specific name which I've forgotten.  I know it's not the barium swallow.  Anyway, I have that and then the endoscopy.  I'm thinking my throat 'situation' is going to turn out to be a scar tissue stricture or something from GERD.  I'm just surprised that I could have had GERD for years and not had symptoms... or recognized the symptoms.  I don't get heartburn, etc.

Anywho, I'm ok.  I'll just have to wait out the test and see what they say.  I'm not too keep on giving up chocolate.  Just thinking about that has sent me on a craving binge.  tongue

Don't worry about that - you'll get fixed up and probably be able to 'cheat' a little and won't even bother you! :)

Just as an aside here...do you normally eat a high carbohydrate diet?

I have H.pylori which I had been diagnosed with a week ago. They wrote a prescription for metronidazole & I take it 4 times a day. I'm all confused though and need some help. Ok, so I'm taking Metronidazole and somewhere along the line I was told or st least thought I was told to take this pill every 4 hours. Ok, so as of now these are my symptoms: nausea, fatigue, bloated, headache, back hurts, very frequent urination, every once in a while I get: raw taste in mouth, legs feet & hands twitch/jitters, at work or if i turn my head too quickly I feel like I'm gonna faint.. and when i lay down my hands & feet go numb automatically. Am I abusing this pill? Should I be worried about something else?
