Hair loss

Bernadette,
You already lost your hair after 1 treatment????? sad Geesh, I go for my 1st treatment on Thursday. The wig I want had to be special  ordered because they don't keep the color I want in stock mad   and it will take about 5 weeks to get it. It's been almost 3 since I ordered it, but with my luck it will take the whole 5 weeks or longer. sad Did you shave your head yourself with a regular razor? I may go and have mine done somewhere, knowing me I would cut up my head with the razor. I like your story about the wig cap. That will be something that will probably happen to me too. I may have to run up to the local beauty supply and get something before my wig comes.
Katt
I started loosing it 2 weeks after my first treatment and it took a few days for it to come out. I bought a wig about a month before just to make sure I had one. It isnt as bad as I thought it would be and it looks pretty good :) The only thing I dont like is the heat, it definitely keeps your head warm. I wore a baseball cap to work before all of the hair came out and that was okay. The only thing I dont like about that now that the hair is gone is that you look bald in the back. I have had two chemo treatments now last Tuesday was my 2nd one. Im still sick from the bronchitis that I got from the 1st treatment. I wish that I could get that over with. Katt I suggest you get a hat because you are doing the same treatment as I did and mine was going at 2 weeks. In fact the nurse that helped me with my first chemo treatment said I would be bald by my second one. It is not as bad as I thought it would be just VERY sad when it started to come out.

Vicky I found it much easier to wear without the cap too. It actually makes me feel whole again when I wear my wig, I know that sounds funny but I dont want to look sick.

Hugs:)
Bernadette

Hopefully my wig will be here by then. That's if it starts coming out about 2 weeks after my first treatment. That will be about 5 weeks. I should call them just to check on the status of my order. I'm not a hat or scarf person. And if I started wearing those things to work people would wonder why. Only a few select people in my office know. I work in a small office where there is always drama and office politics going on. I just feel funny about the whole thing. And I get so many compliments on my hair color. I dye it due to greying sad It's kind of a burgundy color. I had a lady over the weekend tell me how she was admiring the color as the sun was hitting it before I walked in the store and I wanted to cry. That has been my biggest dilmea with wigs. Finding a color close to this and a style. I sent away for a color ring thru a website that has the wig I want and I found a color a little close, that's why they had to special order it because they said no one has ever bought that color before. I guess most people get wigs in the basic colors.
I know how you feel about yor hair I just wish this awful disease did not have to take our hair too. Its bad enough that we have to be sick but the hair loss makes it worse. My hair color is red/auburn and I get compliments on it all the time so it is wierd not having it. I did get a compliment on my wig, she said WOW new hair style I like it. Kindof surprised me. I wish you lots of luck on your first chemo, it really is no big deal during it. It didnt hurt at all I did have the metal taste after for about a week but other than that no problems. Ask lots of questions about your nausea drugs I wasnt sure when to take them and had to call. How are you going to work and not tell your co-workers? All of mine know and they are very supportive. I have missed alot of work so there is no way they would not have known. Talk to you again.

Hi Kattbird, I know what you mean about color and styling. It really makes me feel good when someone compliments me on my hair and the way I cut it. BUT... I have found that the highlighting kit really helped me with the color of my wig. It was all one color and darker than I was used to so I bought (2) highlighting kits that we're lighter and had a little copper color to them. It was easy to do the highlighting because my wig was on the stand.

It turned out so cute and I get compliments all the time. I have disclosed to a couple of people that it's a wig and they seem really surprised.

The brutal fact is that after 16 days with both of my chemo treatments I lost my hair. It was scary, the onocolgist told me but I didn't think he meant the very 16th day!

It's tough to feel crummy and not have hair too! Then add to it scars! Wow - aren't we amazing that we can even talk about all of this!

I agree with Bernadette - I was slow to complain about the nausea and pain meds only to find out that after they were adjusted I actually had an easier time.

Thinking of you and hope your first treatment is not as bad as you're anticipating!

LOL,
Donna
Donna, did you get a human hair wig? Because I thought you could only due things to human hair wigs that you can do to your own hair. That was one of the first things I asked at this place I went to, if I could color it and they said only if it's all human. The one I ordered is part human and fiber and I won't be able to use real products on it. sad I may call tomorow to make sure they did order my wig. I already got my meds filled and will take them with me on Thursday so they can tell me what to take when. I can't even remember to take a vitamin once a day (which reminds me, I need to take one now) I don't know how I'm going to keep up with taking what I have. I have 3 diff meds right now. I hope they will work and I won't have to get something else filled. Of all things I just came back from vac yesterday and last week while away part of my tooth broke off. One that is more filling than tooth. I knew this tooth would have to be crowned eventually. I went to the dentist today and told him about my cancer and treatments starting this week and if there was any way possible he can do something temporary. Well, he was able to do it but said any kind of sensitivity or anything to let him know right away. Gosh I hope I don't have to try to have a root canal and crown while I'm doing chemo.
Hi Katt & Donna

I just had to write one more note on this. I did great with both of my chemo treatments as far as being nauseas I unfortunatly had a reaction to one of the drugs that caused me to be sick. Then I got bronchitis and have been sick from that for over 3 weeks. I started my 3rd dose of antibiotics. I think if the reaction and the bronchitis were out of the picture I would have sailed through all of this. I just hope this antibiotic will do the trick. Katt I think you will sail through all of this because very few people have the problems. My Doctors saying is NO VOMITING! So just make sure you take the nausea drugs. Dont go into the first treatment scared it really is not bad at all. I was very surprised that it didnt hurt at all. Im not sure why I thought it would but I did. We will all be with you on Thursday so dont worry :)

I didnt see your post until I posted, I lost a filling too right at the beginning of all of this We have a lot of similarities!

Hi Kattbird, yes my wig is human hair. By the way my insurance company paid for it and that was a relief because it was very expensive ($1200). I couldn't have paid that much on my own.

It is really natural looking and as I said I get lots of compliments. After visiting several wig shops in the malls I cried and felt like I was going to look like a sick alien forever, then found this site. And as it turns out I've had to wear it for almost a full year -- what with having a recurrence in June -- I'm hoping for hair around December but at first I'll still need to wear the wig.

I finally made sense of the cost by telling myself that losing my hair was bad enough without having to deal with a wig I didn't like. Don't know if you still need a wig but here's the web site for the company I dealt with and they're world wide. www.iwanthair.com/locations/mem_CO_hairunlimted.htp - the contact email is carlacci@gmail.com it's for Hair Unlimited but I think the parent company is Transistions.

I know what you mean about meds. Wow, I've never been so consumed by what I'm taking and when I'm taking it. It's weird to have to take so much and to have to pay the co-pays. Ick. I just keep telling myself that this is only temporary.

I agree with Bernadette - NO VOMITING! It shouldn't have to be that hard these days -- after all it is 2005 right!

Sorry about your tooth!

Thinking of you!

P.S. Hope you're better Bernadette - bronchitis makes it difficult to sleep as I recall.

My insurance will only pay $350. Thanks for the link though. I can't afford to pay the difference on an expensive wig. I go tomorrow for my first chemo. I don't even have any little turbans/headcovers yet. I will do that this weekend. I am not going to walk around the house bald. I just refuse.

Bernadette, how are you feeling? Is the bronchitis any better?

Hi Kattbird, I'm very lucky that my insurance covered it! I wouldn't have been able to pay the difference either.

I order the little turban/headcovers the first go round with my chemo and I got a few scarfs -- I'm with you I won't walk around bald either!!

I'll be thinking of you tomorrow - by the way I imagined my first treatment to be much worse than it actually was. I had a couple of people tell me horror stories of friends of friends etc. that they'd heard of that had it really bad. Not exactly sure why anyone would do that but almost everyone knows someone who's had cancer and has a story to tell.

I was so scared that I cried the night before and couldn't sleep wondering if I could endure it...well, the answer was yes I could. Actually my side effects happen on the third day after the chemo, the first two days are a breeze. Strange but true and still even at their worst they weren't as bad as I had imagined!

I will tell you that I experienced really profund mood swings and by the fourth day after chemo I'm pretty teary. It goes away in the next couple of days but I wasn't prepared for that. Don't know if you'll have the same reaction -- I understand that chemo is as individual as cancer in the way it affects people.

Please let me know how you're doing.
Hi Katt & Donna

Im still coughing like crazy and to top it all off my boss called and said he wants me to just stay home at least another month!!! I have already missed so much work and I usually never get sick. They are going to try and hire a part timer to help out while Im gone. My boss is just worried because he thinks I will get more sick as the chemo treatments go on. I swear I would have sailed through this if it were not for the cough. Iam so depressed right now because I dont feel like I have any control of my life. I want to go back to work but I cant while Im coughing all of the time, and Im sick to death of staying home. And to make it even worse I go to long term disability and it only pays 60% of my wages. I hate this disease and what it has done. Sorry to be so negative its not usually like me to be this way.

Katt I walk around the house bald all of the time as soon as I come in whatever is on my head comes off, you might change your mind on that one. I have 3 step kids and when they were with us last weekend I showed then my head and they were like cool...it didnt even bother them. The middle one came up and rubbed my bald head and then gave me a hug :)

On a different note my daughter sent me a book called BOOBS it is a great collection of breast cancer survivor stories. I have read almost half and I just got it today.

Donna you said that you have had a reacurrance in less than a year, Im so sorry for you that must be very hard. Were they both in the breast? I guess I dont have alot of history on you yet :)

Hugs:)
Bernadette

Hi Bernadette, yep, both on the left side.

Actually my recurrence was on the scar from my mastectomy. I was told that less than 2% of mastectomy patients have a recurrence and that I'm on the unlucky side of the statistic. Hopefully the surgery got it this time, and if not maybe the chemo and if not maybe the radiation.

I understand the anger at this disease...I think that's pretty normal. Sometimes I feel very lonely, especially around my family because they don't know what it's like to have your life threatend with cancer, and even if they try they can't understand the feelings.

It's hard to be positive all the time, especially when you're not feeling well. Besides coughing all the time stinks and it's difficult to sleep which adds to the depression.

I'm interested in the book! I'll look for it at the book store. Do you know the author?

I can't stand sitting at home with nothing to do either. During my first cancer treatment I stayed home on my chemo weeks (I got chemo every other week) and went to work the off week. I hated it, it's not like a vacation or time off where you can do something fun or complete a project.

This time around I stay home if I'm really sick or if I'm going to be teary (a side effect for me on the 3rd day). I don't want to cry at work - it's depressing for me and for my co-workers. Plus going on long term disability is a huge budget issue. I understand you're being depressed. I think I remember someone writing on this site that it's okay to express real feelings. I can't promise that I'm always going to feel up even without going through treatment.

My new most hated phrase is "keep a good attitude" man, that really makes me feel crummy. Especially if I can't do it. It seems that only people who've not had to deal with cancer can say that. In the real world it isn't that easy!

Thanks for asking about my history, I'm glad to have a connection!

Hugs back to YOU,
Donna
Donna

Thanks for writing back to me. I cant believe that you have already had a recurrance that is my biggest worry now that it will come back. Alot of the women here have had it come back so that worries me. Why did you have a mastectomy? Did you already have chemo and radiation? I sure hope you have not had to do this twice. I know how you feel about being lonely, I have actually isolated myself some because I just get tired of talking about my sickness.

Iam usually a very positive person but the last few days I have been very down I think it is because I dont have enough to do. I want to go back to work I know that would help.

The author of the book is Ann Kempner Fisher I have just about read it all and it is good. My daughter is having a hard time with all of this. She lives 3 hours away and cant come to see me us much as she would like.

Sorry for all of the questions but I like to get to know people.

All you women just sound so wonderful. I submitted a post a while back about my dr. giving me a menu of treatments. I went back to him and told him I decided which one I wanted: "the one that got the best chance of getting me better". So he started me on weekly Taxol. Just had my 4th - 1/3 of the way thru. Started losing my hair last week, so went and got a buzz cut. Also bought a super cute wig and a couple of babushka type scarves. I can't stand going around without something on my head because it's drafty up there. I live in Clear Lake, TX, a suburb of Houston. I'm a very young 63. I just feel so much love for all of you. I imagine that you're younger than I am and have more to cope with; family, job, etc. I'm divorced, live alone with my pets, and am on long term disabililty from work.

Just wanted to jump in and say HI. and thank you all for the replies I got from my "no subject". Not sure I know where that subject line is yet.

Welcome to the breast buddies group! I know you will find lots of good information here I know I have. At times I feel like this site has kept me sane.

Iam 45 years old married with 2 grown children and 3 step kids. I live near Seattle in Washington. We have a cat and 2 miniature schnauzers (they are my babies)

Are you taking only taxol? I started out doing taxotere, adriamycin and cytoxen but the taxotere made me very sick so Im doing just AC I think I will be doing taxol after the other 2 are done. Then I will have radiation.

I had a very tough time loosing my hair, it started coming out at 2 weeks. I had bought a wig but didnt want to wear it. I finally put it on and I really like it. I feel whole again when I wear it. It is alittle darker and shorter than my natural hair but I like it.

Thanks for your reply

Bernadette, you just reminded me that I have AFLAC insurance along with regular and I have disability with them, but I have to be out for a week before they start paying. That's one of my biggest fears (besides the hair loss) that I will get sick and have to miss time from work. I just got vac time (3 weeks) and have used most of it. I was on vac from 9/1-9/11. For the most part it was ok. It relaxed me (the beach always does), but I was making myself sick before I went just thinking about all this. I had such stomach pains that i was going to bed early so I could fall asleep and not have any pain. A girl in my office I think is coming down with a cold which is all I need with me getting my 1st treatment today. I took off today due to my hemorrhoids being inflammed from constipation. I know, too much info (TMI). But I am going to go to the wig place that I went to a month ago and get some head coverings for around the house. I still have this feling I will have to go to the beauty supply and get a quick wig before mine comes.

Welcome Mary, I'm new to all this too, and these ladies have a lot of info and I have learned a lot. Even though my doc's say don't believe everything you read on line. Well, you/these ladies are going/gone thru this and share your experiences which helps others in what may happen. Doesn't mean tha same thing will happen to you, but you see what things can.

Not much to add except I was the first one in my crowd to get A/C. Gee I am just so lucky with things like this. Notice my tongue in cheek? I did not have enough sense to figure out I should shave my head. I put up with it until I was bald. Onc told me 17 days and sure enough was he ever right. Now to the funny things you remember. I got into the shower on day 18 and went to wash my hair and stopped in my tracks, as many here will tell you, I am my own best source of things to laugh at. I stood there and could not make up my mind...Do you use soap or shampoo on a bald head. Not to put myself in the elite brain club but I ruled out conditioner right away. I kept standing there looking at the two and I could feel the uncertainty building. Suddenly, I just laughed and realized how much I hoped this was the hardest decision I would have to make. If you can keep your humor it really helps.   Best of luck and PCE is always here if you need us. Joyce

How wonderful it would be to see Angels where there are only clouds. How sad it would be to see clouds where there are Angels.

By the way, anyone have any suggestions on lotion(s) to use on your head for moisturizing I guess. All I have in my house is perfumed type lotions, would they suffice?
Katt,I used baby lotion and it smells so good and keeps your head moisterized. My hair is starting to come back in now but i still put baby lotion on to keep it soft and smelling so good.....Tammy
Joyce,I had the same thing happen to me about the bald head and to use soap or shampoo,I think the chemo brain started settin in.You have to have humor through all this, how about your eyebrows did you have a hard time keepin both of them on?I get hot and i wipe my face in the store and when i get home i only have one eyebrow on.HA HA i just crack up laughing....Tammy
