I had one stent put in my LAD last year and other than that the second worst injury I`ve every had was an ingrown toe nail removed..I`ve been amazingly healthy my whole life except for the disaster of last year I`ve been very lucky..toe nail..sprained ankle..a tooth pulled or drilled here or there..That`s about it

heart cath #1:  2 stents in left anterior descending in feb 2005, and 1 stent in a 3rd smaller artery.
heart cath #2:  no new stents, just checking, july 2005.  some new 30-40% blockage, not enough to stent yet.  february stents doing fine.
 
genetic history:  dad died of 3rd heart attack at 62, brother died of 1st heart attack at 57, mother had heart attack 15 years ago, still going strong, no surgeries for any of the above.

Wow, in just 3 posts we have 7 stents!  Actually, I don't know what happened to my 3rd stent, cuz that's when my calcified artery ruptured.  Then a triple Bypass last year after the ruptured artery...so metal there! yeah

Libby, that makes me so sad to hear about your Dad and your Brother.  I'm so very sorry about your losses.

here's the beauty of dad's and brother's story: both died literally instantly. they were both with friends. they closed their eyes and were gone, no struggling, no pain, no horrible moments, just went to sleep quite peacefully, instantly. thank you for your thoughts. i just lost my brother 2.5 years ago, but my dad 22 years ago. i miss him as much today as then, i try to explain to darren: the grieving is certainly lessened, but i still miss him. i think it's hard for others to understand, 'til they've lost someone.

i know stents are starting to replace bypass in many cases. i think this is a GOOD thing, so much less invasive. i would sure vote for it any time over having the ole sternum cracked. ugh.

I would certainly agree with those sentiments re stents vs bypass!

Thank you for telling me about your Dad and Brother. That would be the way most of us would like it when it's our time.

Stent....Oct. 2002.  Esophagus removed Jan. 2003 because of cancer.

dfox6, I am so very sorry about the esophageal cancer!  Did you have Barrett's?  I'm asking cuz, I have GERD with Barrett's and had mild dysplasia, but as of my last egd they said the dysplasia had disappeared.

Hi Teri,  Yes, I had Barrett's.  Had it for years and finally devoleped an ulcer in my esophagus that became cancerous.  Have been cancer free for 2 1/2 years.   Thanks for your concern....Dave

Well Teri and all!!!

I have GERD but not enough to cause me chest pains according to the gastro guy!! Go figure! My cardio does not think to this day that any chest pain I have is due to my heart. I do have asthma. Can anyone here tell me what my problem is???? Any test I had in the past was negative, until I had an angiogram. Yes I still believe I have problems related to my heart. Going through depression again, had my PAXIL raised from 20 to 40 mgs. Hope it helps. Don't know right now. still too early. Anyone else going through the ropes again?????

hi all,

dave - how does one have one's esophagus removed?  i have tons of esophageal problems.  i don't understand how you compensate for that now?  please explain, many thanks!

maryme - my docs sometimes tell me the same thing, that my probs are related to other causes and not as much heart, although i do have valid heart problems too.  but i have lots of chest pain, and i attribute a lot of it to the 9 surgeries i had with breast cancer, and the accompanying adhesions, AND gerd and spastic esophagus.  sigh.  so lots of reasons for the ole chest to hurt without throwing heart into the mix.

MaryMe!!  Oh, I am sorry to hear that you are going through this depression stuff - It sure isn't much fun, that's for darned sure!  I just went through a bad bout of it over a month or so ago and got put on Zoloft.  It really helped, so I'm wishing you the same!! xoxoxo

Libby, The term for the procedure is an esophagectomy. The esophagus is removed and replaced by a tube formed from the stomach. It is a major operation and only done as a lifesaving measure. You can get more info by doing a web search.
 
Teri, A Google search will give you a lot of info about the procedure.  In my case it worked fine after two operations. I had a second operation because of a twist in the "new" esophagus. I can eat everything that I ate before, but  do have to go have my stomach pumped twice a year. This is just a precaution to see that everything is o.k.  I had to go about once a month for the first two years to get my throat dialated(because of scar tissue).  I am doing great, happy to be alive. yeah Dave

I'd like to congratulate both Libby and you, Dave for being able to overcome these obstacles and then have heart issues added into the mix!!

wow dave,

that sounds like an unbelievable procedure.  i didn't know they could do that, but hey, they seem to be able to do the most amazing things these days.  it sounds like, in some ways, you feel better than before you had it, is that right?  i can't say that sounds like the easiest way and i know that they do it as a life-saving procedure only, but i'd be happy to hear that you feel the surgery was well worth it, 'specially if you're able to eat everything you could before.
