Hello I am new at this Chat room stuff so hopefully this will go where it is supposed to go and I will be able to find replies later!!!
I am a mom of a 5yr and a 2yr, my 2yr has seizures. They started as an infant and then stopped but again at 20 months had a horrible one that caused us to be life watched out of our town. Our journey has not been an easy one, as I'm sure none of ours is. He is currently on Trileptol and we like it. We have seen no negative side effects!!!! Our biggest problem now is when he is sick, with anything, cold, ear ache, stomach flu he starts seizures ( fevers don't even occur). Our Dr. puts him on diasipam sp? and raises his trileptol level to control the breakthroughs yet my husband and I are living in constant fear of the next illness, and at 2yrs old many are to come. I'm wondering can anyone relate or has anyone found things to work. My husband and I feel very alone in this because of course no one we know has had to deal with this in their family so we feel everyone else is enjoying the party but we're looking in from the window!!! Dear Lynnie,Whatever you do,try to be in control and say to yourself,if Im afraid, what is a 2 yr old meant to feel?Children can feel the edginess and stress around them,if youre calm and confident,
your little one will feel alot less stressed.The reason Im suggesting this is that stress can trigger seizures and believe me even constipation can!As a mom search and read every info you can,do your best and live your life to the fullest.ENJOY EVERY SEIZUREFREE DAY
and try to be happy eventhough its very hard to do.You seem to have control over his seizures,thats so wonderfull!try to keep him healthy,some antibiotics may not agree with his meds,even your simple aspro may not,it is wise to double check with your pharmacist, try natural remedies.Believe me I can relate to you so much, BEEN THERE DONE THAT...Enjoy your family and dont feel alone,let the positive energy flow in your home,this will reflect on your littleones wellbeing.I hope this was comforting.

It is common that illness, even with no fever lowers the threshold and allows more seizures to happen. You also need to be careful of any over the counter meds you give that may further lower the threshold.
It is tough to fear sickness and more seizures. Do your best to wash hands extra in cold and flu season...extra sleep, good diet, will help....Hang in there on the tough days and know they will pass.

Gosh I never even knew that being ill, or having a cold can bring them on. More stress. That makes alot of sense though. When you are on AED's you can also be on antibiotics. I am real new to this. I just started Keppra 3 weeks ago and was dx'ed the same time. Well thanks for sharing everybody. You all seem very knowledgeble (sp?-bad headache!)

I always have sz's when i'm sick. Like stress, hormones, and fatigue, sickness is a sz trigger for me as it is for alot of people with E. It's weird and no dr has ever been able to give a definitive answer as to why.

Yall do bring up some interesting points about being sick and the seizure threashold. Jeremy is rarely sick hes always been the healthy one out of the 4 kids.
Now I was wondering should I get him a the FLU shot this year I never have in the past but yalls post are making me worry about what would happen if he did develop the flu?

We have always been told that the whole family needs a flu shot because of our son's epilepsy and asthma. I was a teacher and needed one anyway. Have since had worsening Asthma so it is needed....
If he does not have any other things that prohibit the shot(allergy to eggs), then it can be a good idea. Call the pede soon since they often run out early!

HI Sonya, so glad to see you have made your way over here. I am not a fan of the flu shot. I know that it is good for young kids and older folks. I know that you can have an adverse reaction to the shot. This is a big controversy, that I am gonna stay out of. I myself, never got a flu shot and probably won't unless highly recommended by my Dr. . There are only 3-4 strains in the flu shot each season. Based on the most popular strains from the season prior. Also I just hate shots in general!! But for some kids if their E is bad, you don't want anything else making them sicker like the flu. So if the Dr. approves and recommends go for it.!! Wishing everyone health this upcoming week. Tracy
I have some health problems and they do reccomend I get the shot but I have gotten sick from it even though they say its not a live virus.
I always have to talk myself into getting it.
The shot itself doesn't bother me its just the side effects.
Jeremys pediatrician is due back from maternity leave in October so I will check with her once she gets back.

That's funny you said that Sonya cause about 12 years ago I got a flu shot, they swore that it wasn't going to give me the flu, only flu like symptoms. Ok, well I got real sick for about a month. They still maintained that it wasn't from the shot. I asked them if this is what they considered flu like symptoms then. They said it was possible. The supposed flu like symptoms were just as bad as the flu was so I never got the shot again.
I know even though it wasn't "live" it could have been modified live, I learned all about these shots in Veterinary Assisting Class last year. I would personally try to stay away from the shot. I know way to many people who have gotten sick from the shot. I would rather take a gamble with nature :)

hi i dont know what really to do my little brother is having a seizures and like he had one at like 1 and now like last night they checked to see if it was meninjitus but it wasnt so now we dont know i just want to know what kind of doctor did you go to its weird he only has a seizure then like 30 or so mins later he is ok im scared i just want to know whats wrong can you help i just need what kind of doctor you went to sorry for posting this on yours but your son is 2 like my brother
