"Surgery Ups Survival with Common Heart Ailment

HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) affects more than 500,000 Americans, so it's actually more common than better-known conditions such as Crohn's disease or multiple sclerosis. HCM involves a thickening of the heart muscle walls, particularly the wall (or septum) that separates the two main pumping chambers." http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_26204.html

That is a great link Teri.

I was educated abuot the reason Blacks have such higher blood pressure is the way they cook and the highly salty spices they use and they need to use alternatives. I do agree with that. I have  really changed my eating habits and very very low sodium for i am highly salt senstative i can eat just a small spoonfull of something with salt and I think to myself who stubbed their toe with the salt shaker and  in a few moin I am puffed up my feet and l;egs no ankles at all h just one big log and that is part of my CHF too so I hardly eat any salt manly Mrs. dash.

ok I cook greens in a cast iron skillet and a dab of olive oil and onions and soy bacon & one of my friends who works for dept of Health tell me  some  enthic groups tend to cook with more salt than others and they need to learn to cook with less salt , then I told her how I cook greens so she told me she would pass that on with olive oil instead of lard or fat back. but yes we all do need to watch our salt.

When I read this headline, it really made me stop and think.  We have to remember that all the med's we take have the potential for being dangerous, especially if we don't follow the Dr.'s directions on how to take them...this just adds more warning to that.

"Stopping Aspirin Therapy Triples Stroke Risk"

"For the many people who take aspirin regularly to thin the blood because they're at high risk for having a heart attack, stopping aspirin abruptly endangers more than the heart. Doing so more than triples the likelihood of having of a stroke or TIA (commonly called a mini-stroke), new research indicates." http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_26252.html

Heart-failure research focuses on drug for African-Americans

"After Jacksonville resident Johnnie Cherry suffered three heart attacks, his physician put him on a low-salt diet and inserted a pacemaker into his chest. The 49-year-old widower also was enrolled in a clinical trial in 2001 to determine whether a heart medicine targeted specifically for African-Americans actually worked."

"Blood Filtering May Improve Prognosis After CPR"

"After resuscitation from cardiac arrest, there's a high risk of the patient dying from intractable shock, but this may be averted in some cases by a blood filtering procedure, according to a small study. Lack of circulation followed by restoration of blood flow -- ischemia-reperfusion -- is known to cause widespread damage to blood vessels. This is thought to lead to death by multiple organ failure following successful resuscitation, Dr. Mehran Monchi and colleagues note in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology." http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_26304.html

"Blood Pressure Lower in Adults with Long-lived Dad"

"A middle-aged adult's risk of high blood pressure seems to be related in part to how long his father lived, new research findings suggest. In a study that followed more than 1,000 adults age 50 and up, French researchers found that those whose fathers lived to the age of 80 had healthier blood pressure readings than their peers."

"High Blood Pressure Linked to Higher Glaucoma Risk

The results of a study involving more that 27,000 people with glaucoma suggest that high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is significantly more common in this group than in those who do not have hypertension, UK researchers report. They also found that treating hypertension with beta-blocker drugs, but not other types of antihypertensive drugs, lowered the risk of glaucoma." http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_26332.html

"Mysteries of garlic are revealed"

" University of California scientists have determined garlic's active ingredients work the same in the same way as the chemicals in chili peppers and wasabi.

Researchers at the University of California-San Francisco's Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology said garlic's pungent aroma and its effects on the body, such as dilating blood vessels, are due to a variety of sulfur-based chemicals, especially allicin." http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_26338.html
