Hi all,
I notice that when my Gerd is bad, my heart really pounds after I eat or drink anything. It doesn't have to be much.........even toast. Have any of the rest of you noticed that symptom?
Cathy,
Have you had a complete cardiac work-up?

I have the same thing. Not all the time, but lately. A beer will bring it on fast. I think its just another part of this. I've had it for years and heart was checked with numerous tests. Plus if it was the heart, I've had it so long I'd be dead. It seems once I have the bad symptoms it lasts for days and then just tappers off. I'm trying new things now, so seem to help.
Hi! :)
I've done a lot of research re GERD and cardiovascular connections as I have both. One thing that I've read and it would tend to sound right...that with acid reflux, as the acid comes up and irritates the esophageal nerve endings, it could/or might irritate other nerves connected to the heart causing the palpitations that we notice. In that case they would be benign.
However, since no one really knows for sure!! - you should always discuss this with your Dr. and decide from there if further heart testing might be advisable. Better safe than sorry!
Hugs, Teri :)

Yes, I've had a cardiac work-up (stress echo).
I'm talking about a heartrate that goes up and pounds hard after eating, not the irregular heartbeats. But I imagine, if it can irritate the nerves to cause irregular heartbeats, it could increase the rate and force of contraction too. It did quiet down after I started a beta blocker for high blood pressure though.

Yes I used to experience this a lot. I have to say though, since I have been following a low carb diet I haven't noticed it. I think in my case it's about volume of food. Carbs don't cause bloating for me and I think that was the cause--perhaps pressure in the chest area effect the heart...

Thanks Jocaste!
Hi Cathy! :)
Beta Blockers do tend to help these arrhythmias - my husband has these, too and though he says he can still feel them, it's much better since he started the Beta Blocker. You mentioned you had a cardiac work - up? Was this due to these increased heart rates? The reason I ask this, is because usually this would include a Holter Monitor, especially because your complaints were the increases in heart rate and unless you are having them (tachycardia) at the time of the testing, they will not be picked up. I'm glad the BB is helping you!
Best wishes to you!
Hugs, Teri :)
I hope to see you and the others at our combined cardio/GERD chat this Thursday the 15th!! I think it should be fun! :)

Hi Terri,
No, I was having the stress echo because of a ton of PVCs. I was already on the beta blocker when I had these. I was on a beta blocker for my BP.
Actually......a few months ago, I decided to come down a little on my Toprol, because it had made me a zombie. I could never think straight, and had heard beta blockers can cause this. I went down from 75mg to 50mg, and actually had alot fewer PVCs! I really think my GERD was causing alot of the PVCs, but also I think the Toprol was lowering my rate to the point where maybe I was having some escape beats??
The Toprol did wonderful things for me, in bringing down my BP. It also took care of all my migraines! I love this drug........but it did make me dumb! So I hope your husband does okay with it. I would love to get my whole mind back, but I really need the Toprol for my migraines now.
The increased heartrate I spoke of in my initial post above, would happen right after eating. It happened especially when I ate alot, but started also happening when I would eat just a little. I always wondered if it was related to my GERD. But when I started the Toprol, all that went away.
I'm also wondering about these heart things being manifest as I took the trip through perimenopause. Alot of women seem to have funky benign heart things when they hit this time in their lives. Oh.......it's such a lovely time! NOT!

Cathy, you are right about the menopausal thing - I had a hysterectomy at age 46 due to fibroids and endometriosis and then had a heart attack at age 48. It still makes me wonder a bit, though...I know I had some blockages at the time, they told me that they wouldn't have caused the MI and I do have a family history...but I do believe the hormonal thing does factor in here.
My husband is on 50 mg. of Toprol as well. :) He was really tired in the beginning, but is doing great now! And speaking of BB's, I'm supposed to start Coreg soon...blech!
My GERD has already been terrible this past week, and I don't feel it easing at all - I don't know what they'll do next.
Take care.
Hugs, Teri :)

YES!!! I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS!! I thought I was weird- because I also have even seen a cardiologist ( negative work-up ). I am getting a lot of insight from this forum. I am glad to hear that others are experiencing the same things I am . Wish NONE of us were -- but at least I am not alone!
