Heart Transplants

Can you imagine being so ill, having a heart so weak, that you've been told that you must have a Heart Transplant to live?!  I have not reached that stage and I'm hoping I never have to...But many others are there already. 
 
There is a lot that the patient must go through both emotionally and physically in making this decision - it's not always easy.
 
"When the heart no longer can adequately work and a person is at risk of dying".  That is when they are considered/or recommended to be put on the transplant list.

hi teri,

that's an interesting topic, heart transplants.  i have a friend who was a candidate for a heart transplant.  he got his heart disease from a hunting trip to some south american country, infected his heart, and cratered it (i don't really know any other details).  but while waiting for a transplant, he got second and third opinions, and the other docs believed he did NOT need a transplant, so he just had some other procedures and takes lots of meds and watches his lifestyle...this was about 5 years ago (when he was predicted to die soon without the transplant)!

Wow, how very fortunate for your friend!!  yeah I'm glad that he had several opinions in there to help sort that out - that's always a good idea, especially when it's something so serious! 

How is he doing today?  Can he do most things that he wants to do?  Does he have limitations?  When you see him tell him I send him my best wishes and to come on board here anytime - I'd love to meet him!

well, the only bad thing about my friend is that for a while after this all started up he lost tons of weight, started working out, quit the barbecue and beer after work every day routine, stayed home more with family etc.  and i saw him a few weeks ago at a party and he was pretty heavy again, drinking some beer, had just had a huge high fat meal at a big steak house, etc... sad

Wow, that's a real shame after all he's gone through, Libby.  There is as you know a stage that many of us go through with serious disease called denial.  I would imagine after your description of his activities once again, that he's in this stage.  I really feel badly for him.  I hope that he gets a nudge from someone, though I'm sure his Dr.'s probably do that...
