Help, could I have mastitis?

It's been over 3 months since I finished rads and it took my breast quite some time to heal.  The nipple took the longest, it was dry hard and cracked but eventually got more normal.  Well in the last couple of weeks it got dry hard and cracked again.  And all of a sudden this weekend it started to hurt and is red and warmer.  I used some bacitracin ointment on it last night and covered it with a big bandage.  I thought it was better until I took a shower this morning and could see it's still red and it hurts now.
 
Should I go in to see my onc. or regular doc?  I think I could get in sooner with the reg. doc so I will call there now.  But has anyone else had this happen?  it reminds me of mastitis I had when breast feeding.

get in right away to see the doc... like even TODAY if you can, it doesn't matter which one you see they should be able to tell if its an infections no matter what kinda doc they are... better safe then sorry... good luck and let use know what it is k..skeeter1

I'd call either the surgeon or PCP. The onc treats cancer with chemo, and he is not likely to be the breast specialist. The surgeon would be better suited to know breast conditions, or even the rad onc.

I think if you call your surgeon , and tell him your symptoms he will get you in right away.Lets hope its just something minor.

I'm heading in to see my onc first thing in the morning.  Bad thing is I just started a new job at a new local department store working the door as a greeter/credit pusher and I need to be there an hour later.  The job is temp. but I was getting bored and poor sitting at home.  This has got me all messed up.  I didn't think too much of it until this afternoon when the nurse I talked to at the onc. office said she would get me in right away.  I was pretty non-chalant about it until she did that.  Then I did some searching online and found the inevitable BC stuff.  I'm only a seven month survivor how do I end up having 2 more scares in that time?  I need the PCE tomorrow ladies at 8:45 in Wooster, oh.

Sorry I didn't post an update Tuesday after I saw the doctor.  I went straight to work after and then had a funeral that evening.  Yesterday was filled with getting my son and step son registered at our local career center for their last 2 years of high school.

So the doc said it is an infection and pretty bad too.  Her words were that the breast tissue will go through a lot of changes in the year following rads.  She said I was smart to get in there when I did and she put me on a strong antibiotic (don't remember the name right now).  She also said I would not feel good for a few days and she is right.  I am worn out and weak.  I can barely stay awake for 3 or 4 hours without getting so sleepy I can't see straight.  Right now I am getting ready to go to work this evening and I hope if I drink lots of coffee I can stay alert.

Thanks for being here for me yet again.  Does this never end?

Mia, our dear Mel once told us that things like this were "not in the brochure". When you get a cancer diagnosis, they leave out all of these details of the real things that we go through. I think all of us had something at one time or another that was not in the brochure.

I too have had some things that were of concern and brought to doctor's attention, just to turn out to be a side effect of surgery or rads....the gift that keeps on giving. Hey, if it gives me long life without cancer, I will gladly take everything it throws at me.

Hang in there Mia...this will pass too....rest up and enjoy the weekend!

Follow Lori's advice and REST!!!!!!! At least, if you can at all with your schedule. Your body needs some time to heal sweetie. If you get tired................lay down and just take care of Mia.
