Hi everyone,
Help! every year around the fall season my husband has severe allergies, sneezes, coughs, and spreads germs like crazy!. Then, I get bronchitis!! My kids also experience symptoms of him spreading his germs by sneezing every 5 min. Bless his heart, he really does suffer. Anyway, my question is: What type of preventative can be taken prior to the start of major allergy season?.
My twins do get sick almost at the same time. One year, I sprayed lysol and the other twin did not get sick. I am wondering if this perhaps might help and has anyone tried it during this time of year?

Allergies are not contagious. Though...when you do have allergies and your body is trying to fight that off your resistance is lowered somewhat and you may pick up "what's going around" more easily. 
Is your Husband in good health otherwise? I would recommend that he goes to his Dr. and asks for a recommendation for something to help contain his allergies. It could be a prescription or something he recommends OTC. Sometimes the salt/saline nasal sprays help out - my daughter's used them before and had pretty good success with them. Right now she takes Zyrtec 10 mg. per night and Flonase, a nasal spray, and she is 95% controlled. Everyone's different! :)
I don't know what to tell re your children becoming ill at the same time? Coincidence? Perhaps they have similar allergies? Using lysol, or small amt. of bleach mixed with your laundry detergent, just be careful with that 
or alcohol used to wipe off a countertops, telephone, door handles.
Remember to wash hands a lot - that's the worse offender in aiding the spread of disease.

Thank you Teri for your helpful hints. He is in really good health. He really does need to see someone but you know men...they go only if they are gonna faint to get there!. LOL.
He has no problem going to get the OTC drugs. lol. I will tell him to get some saline and can you get the Zyrtec OTC?
As far as the kiddos go, they probably are affected with allergies too. My daughter and grandaughter are affected.

Unfortunately, Kathy, Zyrtec is a prescription. There are plenty of OTC types, I don't know if Allegra made that group or not, yet...I never tried Claritin, perhaps we'll get some responses here as to what others have taken and tried and what helped them the most!

Well Teri, he took some claritin and said it didn't help. He has taken, Mucinex, Tylenol Sinus, Robitussin, Claritin, Comtrex...and he is still stopped up!...bless his heart.
Oh yea, did I tell you that my son has been home from school with a poison ivy outbreak....had to take him to doc's office for some steroids to help his horrible looking little body. He was really bad. Things are getting better, slowly but surely.
The other twin was also seen for a virus and fever.
So, the whole family is sick right now. My bronchitis, hubby's allergies, one twin with poison ivy, one with a virus....and our prescription doctor bills are "sky high"!. Oh well...better days are ahead. LOL.

My allergist has me take Clartin, sudafed(for the stuffiness), Nasarel nose spray, and I also take stuff for asthma. My asthma is allergery related due the seasons. The Clartin by itself didn't help me, but with the sudafed and nose spray made a difference. If I keep the allergies symptoms in control it helps keep my asthma in control.

My hubby takes Allegra for his allergies and its been one of the best things for him RX wise. He never had any success with any of the others (ie. Claritin, Zyrtec, Clarinex ect.). Good old OTC Benadryl (the green box) has always been very good to him too but he seems to be a bit more drowsy on the Benadryl than the Allegra so he will save the Benadryl for the weekends when what he needs is sleep.
I have tried almost every RX allergy med there is but none seemed to help me but know what does? Good ole Alavert(non drowsy) which is OTC.....go figure. Claritin does nothing for me except dry me out.
Boy Kathy, it sure sounds like you got your hands full at your house! Fall is beautiful but it plays havoc on everyone I think. My allergies are at their worse in the fall and I always feel so dragged out because of it. Feel better and I hope your family gets well soon

Hello Kathy.... My husband takes Claritin D which is a decongestant, and it works great for him. I have been using Flonase nasal spray for years and I swear by it, but it doesn't work right away it takes a few days to kick in....Good luck !
Update....
My husband is still sick and we have a medicine cabinet that is overflowing!. I think now, he has what I had some down in the chest coughing...poor baby.

I have the same problem year around,but I use kleenex like it's going out of style,Get him some & make him use it.It does make a difference.

Has he had allergy testing? Allergy shots? My friends daughter has severe allergies and had the testing done as well as the shots and they seem to be working for her very well. She no longer gets sick from her allergies like she used to. The shots can take a while to work in some because it slowly builds a resistance to those certain allergens. But for some, it can be way worth it.
I also use Allegra spaingly.It's not a medication that's good in someone with Alzheimer's,or any of the others antihistamines..........Singulair is good though..........

Omega 3 stopped my allergies... Pollen used to be one of my main problems but I don't get affected now.

I would suggest an air purifier for your home if it's in your budget. Im just saving up for one now. I've been dealing with severe allergies around the same time as your husband for years now. For some reason I didnt get it this year - even when my husband and daughter came down with 2 different strains of a virus. I'm not sure if it was coincidence or a fluke but I started taking my meds immediately before i start coming down with symptoms. All i take for the allergies right now is Benedryl in the pill form. Nothing else has seemed to work for me. I also got the humidifier going soon as I started the heat. I also have sinus and respiratory problems so I started taking my inhaler on a regular basis for my chronic bronchitis instead of as needed and I was taking my prescription corticosteroid nasal spray along with a Drixoral and Naproxen for my sinuses. I don't take need to take any nasal spray for my allergies because the prescription one I take helps me out a lot. But I would highly suggest he try one specifically for allergies if he can get one OTC. If not, than a quick little trip to the doc would serve him well. I did take one before I developed respiratory and sinus problems (we have them OTC here in Canada) and it worked wonders.

There are a lot of natural remedies for allergies. (Usually no side effects)! I have rhinitis and I do tend to sneeze a lot from time to time, but not as often as I used to now.
Also, I use an air purifier daily and when I am by it, I do not sneeze much most the time. When I leave the room, I sneeze. (Not all the time). Well now I have several so I can go into the living room now! When I have sneezing attacks, I sneeze many many times yes, but remember like someone just said that is not contagious not the allergies anyways. Cold yes but not the sneezing from allergies. I have been boosting up my immune system now for awhile with a long list of healthy remedies such as enzymes and vitamins and herbs. Even herbal tea may help him out. Simply go to any health food store and ask the person there to recommend something, tell them what his symptoms are and I think for sure they'll find something there probably more than you'd ever need. Also, try Cod Liver Oil and Acidophilis
I too take Fish Oils with Omega 3's in them as they are very good for us, I also now eat Sardines and Salmon as they are very good for us.
But regardless of what I try or take, I just still have to use kleenex most the time.
Cold air is so bad and it sure is cold now.

Has anyone here tried fish oil and had any success yet?
Just please live a healthier life style if you don't already. Get lots of vegetables, Olive Oil, Fish Oil in the diet everyday, and things SHOULD improve.

My friend Liam has had asthma for years now and I told him to take fish oil and gave him a book about nutritoin. He followed it for a while and now he is much better. You CAN do things about your situation, don't keep relying on prescription medicine.
Not every case will be cured by a lifestyle change but you will feel better for it. For me, because of my new life style all allergies have GONE, completely.
