Ladies, have any of you familiar with the MIDWESTERN MEDICAL CENTER, ZION, ILLINOIS?
I have a 30yo friend in Ohio that has bc. She has a 2yo dd. She just finished the a/c, etc about 3 mos ago and now has discovered that she has mets to the liver. She has been on a regiment of the Xeloda(I believe that this is the right drug) for a little over 2 mos. She would take pills for 14 days, then be off 7 days, and then begin another regiment of the on for 14 off 7. She had a pet scan this past week. The spots on the liver have not shrunk but there is one that is "possibly" (can you believe that a specialist would use that word) a little larger. So, now they are sending her to Midwestern Medical Center. She is to be there on Monday for a full week of testing and possibly treatment.
She is very frightened. I am not familiar with this facility or the work that they do. Any info that you might have that I could share with her would be most appreciated.
No I am not familiar with this place. There should be a website about it, tho, did you try that? Cleveland Clinic is a well known cancer center in NE Ohio. I have a friend with Lymphoma who is treated there. Cathi lives in Cleveland, too. I am not sure where she is treated. And of course there are many girls from that area. Hugs MK
I thought that there were several of the gals that were from that state/area. I haven't had time to do much internet checking. My dd has left town for the wkend and I have the 3 girls to take care of. Thankfully, it is suppose to be a pretty wkend. Also going to leave them w/ a babysitter tonite and go have dinner w/ my dd and sil and play with "The Little Prince"! for an hr or so.
Not sure why they would send her to Illiniois, when there are top facilities in Ohio or Michigan, which are closer. But anyway, tell her we are thinking about her... Lori
Rhonda called me again today. I found out a little more info that might put this into perspective as to why she is going to Ill. Evidently, her onco has never done a biopsy on the spots on her liver. He told her dh that he wasn't even sure that it was cancer but was going to treat them as if it was. When she went for her last visit, neither of them could get any definite answers. So, her dh and ds did research and found that this facility is known for its treatment in liver cancer. The hospital if paying for their flight and has made hotel reservations for them. I also asked her if she took Ibuprofin. She told me she goes thru a bottle of 100 like it was candy. Now, did the onco ever ask her this? NO! This med can be very hard on the liver. She also told me that her onco nurse informed her dh and her that "this would eventually kill her" (the liver cancer)! grrrrrrrr She is so afraid and I am just not knowledgable enough about the liver to give her much help, other than support and trying to keep her spirits high and outlook positive.
Grrrr is right. I am a little suspicious of all of this now. I never heard of a hospital paying for a flight. Hmmm. Let us know if you learn more. I went to google and got the site. http://www.cancercenter.com/midwestern-hospital.cfm
