help???

Hi im 22 and for the past month i have had a migraine everyday driving reading and the computer make it worse. i went to the eye doc he said go to the family doc who then gave me meds that didnt work and told me to go for a mri which i have tomorrow but this will be my 10th mri, because i have mulitple sclerosis, lupus , and ulcertive colitis. i dont know where these migraines are coming from but they really hurt and suck, my back is like a board stiff and hard, i havent found anything that has helped, anyone have ideas on what to do, i do not eat much cause of the colitis so i know its not the foods or caffeine, its boggles my mind whats going on. anyone got some advice how to relieve some pain, all my meds barely touch the pain. thanks in advance for ur help.

Hi Chevygurl,

Wow, sorry to hear about this migraine. From what I understand, migraines are known to occur more frequently in people with autoimmune illnesses, which I think all of yours are, that you mentioned. I can't explain it. I read an interesting theory on migraines from an autoimmune perspective, but can't remember the details at the moment. But it made perfect sense, whatever it was! However, I do know that muscle tension in the upper back and neck, can trigger a migraine.

I don't mean to belittle your pain. I know it's horrible, as I have chronic pain myself, and the rare migraine. I don't visit this board as often as the ones I moderate, but like to drop by once in a while.

There are quite a few medications for migraines. Have you thought of calling your family Dr and asking to try an other med? Tell him the one he gave you didn't work. What med did he give you, by the way, if you don't mind saying?

Do you see a pain managment specialist, or have you ever thought of consulting one? I don't know a lot about your other illnesses, but I'm pretty sure a pain specialist would have treatments that might help a little more with the pain. If you want to think about consulting a pain management specialist, you might check out a message that I maintain on the chronic pain board called, "How to Find a Good Dr". It's just a bunch of things that work for me, when trying to find a Dr, plus links to some websites that have physician-locating features.

I'm not sure I can even suggest any "home remedies" for a migraine. But have you ever found anything that helped in the past? Maybe someone else will reply who knows more than I. But meanwhile, just wanted to let you know someone cares, and I hope you're feeling better really soon.

Thanks for answering me, my mri came out normal. so im must be getting this migraines from the spasms in my neck and back. have to wait and see what my nero says. ill have to visit ur forums because i have with constant fatigue and pain from my dieases.

Hi Chevygurl, I have had migraines for 25 years. I also have the terrible tension in my neck, shoulders & upper back. I read somewhere that you can have migraine pain in those areas. I've been lucky enough to get very good relief with fioricet. Imitrex injections also work well for me. I can't use the Imitrex nasal spray because of sinus problems and the pills didn't help.

i have had a headache for 3 wks now.it hurts in my sinuse and sometimes in my ears and according to my last mri there was inflammation in my sinuses and a mucous buildup.that would explain the hurting in my face above my sinuses but i also hurt in the back and base of my head and neck and upper back.could this be 2 different kind of headaches?my neck stays so stiff now.the drs say i wouldn't just now be getting migraines at my age(49).but what does age have to do with migraines?any help would be appreciated.

Hi Becky,
I know I've replied to your messages on the chronic pain board, but I see your message here, and thought I'd make a comment or 2.

I often have pain in the back of my neck, and the areas you describe, when I have a cold or sinus infection. A couple of Drs have told me there are some lymph nodes in that area, and that they are probably inflammed because of the infection. I wonder it that's what is happening with you?

Also, I think I read or heard or something that it's possible to have migraines in the neck and shoulder area. But I couldn't quote any references on that. I know for myself, I can have pain in different places, from different sources at the same time.

I still don't know where your Drs are coming from, when they say you're too old to have migraine for the first time. I've never heard that before. What do your Drs say about the pain in the back of your neck?

My best guess would be inflammed lymph nodes, but I'm not nearly anything close to an expert. I assume you'll be taking anitbiotics? If it's being caused by the inflamed nodes, it should ease up as the infection clears.

brynn the first dr put me on omnicef(antibiotic)for 10 days.that didn't work so after the mri the 2nd dr put me on levaquin.i had already scheduled an appt with an ent before i had the mri done so i kept it and he said after 17 days of antibiotics i still had a sinus infection.he gave me a saline nasal spray to rinse out the sinuses real good and gave me a script for prednisone for six days.i just started on the prednisone yesterday.my left side is worse than my right side he said and last night i had such excruciating pain on my left side.i told my hubby if i didn't feel so bad i would go to the ER.i hate waiting in the ER when you feel so bad.so if it gets bad like that again today there is an after hrs clinic open till 5:00 i might go to.i really need something for the pain although so far today is better.i took everything i could get my hands on last night just so i could sleep if nothing else.i still woke up at 2:00 this morning.

i hope you are still feeling better.keep us posted.

Hi, Chevygurl,

My sister suffered from migraines for 26 years. She experienced them at least once a week, almost losing her job because of them. She always had to go to the ER for shots which knocked her out for at least 24 hours. Her doctors put her on every new drug which appeared on the market. She even carried injections to try and prevent a migraine if she felt one coming on. Nothing worked. CT scans showed nothing abnormal. It was not until she tried a nutritional approach that she got results. Since beginning this, she has not had a migraine and that was over 3 years ago. It sounds as though you have multiple problems interacting. I have friends who were able to rid themselves of their migraines using a natural product and have not had a recurrence.
