I have been diagnosed with hip burisitis and find that pressure on my hips causes a lot of pain. I am looking to buy a new mattress as the one I purchased about a year ago makes the pain really unbearable when I get up in the morning.
Does anyone have any recommendations? Obviously I need a softer mattress but there are so many on the market; really don't know where to start.
Welcome to HealingWell. Sorry about the hip bursitis. This is something I've had flare up a couple of times in the past. First of all, your immediate need is treatment - which your doctor should be arranging. Bursitis is not something to be left untreated. Sometimes a cortisone shot in the area is very effective and is all that's needed. There are also prednisone pill therapy, and physical therapy is sometimes prescribed along with both. I found that the combination of either the shot or pills with physical therapy works best. In addition to that, continuing the special movements recommended in therapy is important. Strengthening the muscles around the hip is important. You might benefit from using a pillow to support your legs while in bed - but please discuss all this with your doctor.
I would not go and buy a new mattress now. I think you should see your doctor and go through what I explained above. Good luck!

My husband is currently dealing with bursitis & seeing an orthopedic. He has done some physical therapy, had an injection with guided imaging too. His dr added Meloxicam for the inflammation & what a difference it is making. I urge you to work with a dr on this, you can get it under control.
Everything Lanie has posted above is how to handle this. I have had it too, granted it's painful but with the right treatment you can get relief. I would not consider a new mattress either since yours is only a year old, I doubt it would help at all. Take care.

I have been dealing with hip Bursisitis for many years . I think about 17 years . It would get so bad i could not walk for about 3 days when it flared up.
My familt doctor was just giving me pills and would give me injections but they would never work . Was so bad that i had to sell my motor cycle after drive bikes for 35 years and was my love and joy.
Had trouble even getting in a boat.
Finally I told him i want to go the the joint assment office in the hospatal.
So they look and say yes you also have arthritus in both hip.
So i go and see a surgeon .
@ minutes in there he said to me . I think we can do a temp fix before we look at hip replacement. sure ill try any thing.
2 weeks later i go and get fluroscopic shots .
My god no pain at all . I want to dance lol
it worked for 6 months and when it started to wear off i just call hime and 1 week later i have another one done.
I,m telling my wife i,m buying another motor cycle this spring .
didn,t take to long just 17 years . Feel really good but so mad at family doctor for not knowing this could have heled me .
Alos i got a new mattress when i was in pain and did not hel at all . just sleeping on the lazy boy.

I’m sorry you’re not feeling well. I have reoccurring bursitis and tendinitis, hips are flaring now actually. Cortisone works for me but for such a short time and because I have SO many pain spots and have so many injections, I now worry about my long term bone issues (potential issues).
Always consult with your specialist. As for purchasing a bed, that’s a hefty expense to try and solve bursitis (that won’t work). The only bed that will help my hip pain is a bed my hips aren’t touching lol. Feel better!

I'm late to this party, but I have bursitis in both hips. I hear it's not as common in guys, well lucky freakin' me! Plus a partial tendon tear in my right gluteus. And then there's the arthritic left ankle, and now both wrists at the thumb base have arthritis. What a mess I am at times! 30 years law enforcement has taken a toll I imagine. Physical therapy, including dry needling, blah, blah, blah.... I was considering surgery for the tear, but the recovery looked to be so burdensome I've been putting it off. I have bad memories of rotator cuff surgery recovery 7 years ago. Plus, my wife needed spinal surgery around that same time as my tear diagnosis and it wasn't going to work out then. It's seriously aggravating. I feel like I'm 55 going on 95!!! I sure wish it was a feeling of 55 going on 25, but don't we all??!!
