I have been in the bed since Friday! Chiro couldn't help. Went to Rheumy yesterday she thinks it may be bursitis. Like I needed anything else. She gave me a novacaine and steriod shot in my hip. No sleep. Darvocet for pain. This am I woke up thought hey I can walk by myself to the bathroom. about an hour later the pain was back. Have any of you suffered from burstis before? I have fibro and RA, I have hurt like this before but the prev rheumy blamed it on the fibro. the new rheumy showed me an exercise to help stretch the butt muscle to assist with the hip joint.
Thanks in advance for any input you have on the bursitis.

i would assume bursitis the problem as well. must keep in mind that RA not only effects the body's joints...but also the surrounding tissues of the joints.
the bursa is the sac in the connective tissue surroundong the joint; the bursa has synovia (joint fluid) as well.
being in bed is good for now because rest & immobilization are the 1st steps of treating bursitis.
now...is the bursitis in your hips? you had an injection directly into the joint cavity correct? did you get one side or both done?
key is to reduce inflammation at this point via NSAIDs if allowed or RX'd; rest; pressure relief by using a pillow/conform cushion under the tailbone to "lift" hips and relieve pressure; corticosteroids/prednisone; analgesia if RX'd; ice; heat; hydrotherapy and PT if needed.
once the severe & acute pain passes it's important to ambulate to avoid the likelihood of adhesions of the affected bursae area.
it's common to get this from RA. FMS can add to the discomfort of course, but the underlying etiology (bursopathy) and disease at root would be the RA.
i get bursitis of the shoulders and it's torture! constant ice and need a sling.
one can develop chronic bursitis thus surgery is an intervention.
it would be a great help to not only do these prescribed exercises to stretch the muscles NOW but always afterwards as well.
core strength (Pilates and abdominal work) will keep everything pulled in tight in the middle and align the pelvis correctly. the hamstrings and quadriceps need condition too to keep the hips strong. everything in order to keep that center of gravity at it's best will help to avoid future exacerbations.
personally, mine gets aggrevated when i get into the situation of overuse of the shoulder joints. so knowing your personal limits is important.
does the Darvocet help you with your pain? if not...get a hold on your doc before the weekend comes! don't wanna get stuck in pain.
rest well & take care,
erin

BTW, Darvocet (regular with no Tylenol or additive) morphine, dilaudid or ANY opioid do not hold ANY antiinflammatory properties. so for anyone having RA or inflammatory joint disease pain...narcotics aren't going to help that sort of pain. they WILL help with pain overall, but steroids & NSAIDs only will help throbbing & inflammation (unfortunately). really stinks when one cannot tolerate nsaids due to GI bleeds and IBD. Darvocet N 100 doesn't have the antiinflammatory property, so if you are having continued pain...you may need an adjunct to it. when do you have a follow up? again, take care.Active/Severe Rheumatory Arthritis. Thanks Erin for all of your advice. The darvocet is not helping. I am going to call rheumy tomorrow. She gave me a injection of novacaine and steroid. Told me to rest and ice. She also ordered xrays of the right hip and ab. I have a appt in the am with the family physician as well. I know when I first get up the stiffness is there but not too much later the pain is incredible!
Thanks again,
Tee

Tee - I have something like brusitis in the shoulder (they say it's similar but isn't it, though it can be debilitating) I will say stretching DOES help (it took a few weeks of persistant stretching sessions before I started feeling better.) I do have to keep at it regularly and suffer when I don't.
