How can I heal GERD without PPI's??

I try quiting the prilosec and i get rebound beyond belief!!  However since being on it my entire intestinal tract burns (read my prior post).  Ive tried diet modifications.  How in the world can I stop the GERD and not be on the PPI's anymore????

Nancy, have you ever been to a naturopathic doctor or an osteopath?  These health care practitioners work on finding natural alternatives to synthetic drugs and alopathic medicine.  For someone with moderate to severe GERD, it can be difficult to manage the condition w/o medication.  However, you may want to research naturopathic alternatives in your area.  Can't hurt to give it a shot!

Hi Nancy,
I also think that conventional doctors don't really consider much else than taking drugs. Maybe an alternative doc would help you figure out what's causing your problem. I'm wondering if you're having a problem with certain foods.......maybe carbs? Didn't you say you have Lyme disease? Are you on antibiotics now? Did this start up after taking antibiotics?
Are you taking probiotics? They might help you alot, to restore a healthy balance of the good bacteria in your intestines.
Do you keep a food diary? That might help give you insight into the foods and drinks that make your GERD worse.
Thanks guys. I do have an alternative dr. Funny thing is she has been trying to get me off PPI's for a couple years and I ignored her. She has me watching my carbs-you are right in that it aggravates things more. I am also taking digestive enzymes. Time will tell I guess.

No, I wasnt on any antibiotics at the time this all started. didnt know I had Lyme disease at the time.

Nancy,

Do you think those digestive enzymes might be causing a problem?  Maybe your intestinal tissues are too delicate for them, and they are digesting them??   Also........did you say you were checked for Hpylori?  I've heard that if you have symptoms that don't respond to PPIs, you should just be treated empirically for it.

The digestive enzymes are not doing it.  I only started those a week ago.  They actually seem to be helping a little bit!  I was tested by endoscopic biopsy for h-pylori and it was negative.
