They can do a test at the hospital called an upper GI. My symptoms are burping and coughing(like you have something in your throat but don't)...heartburn esp when laying down. I take generic zantac that you can buy at walmart. Hope this answers some of question. msboo
I just found this posting. Sorry I didn't find it earlier. I had what I thought was just heartburn until I had a scope put down my throat to my stomach. (can't remember name of the test right now) I not only have acid reflux but it's reoding the lining of my esophogus and the beginning of my small intestines. I started on Zantac, went to Prilosec and am now on Protonix 40mg 2x a day. It's no cure but it helps keep the stomach acid under control most of the time. During flares, the help isn't so great and I have to go on Carafate liquid to protect the linings until the flare is over. I have no acid taste or burning in my throat. Just the constant heartburn feeling that over the counter meds couldn't cure. We're all different in symptoms except I haven't heard of anyone that didn't have the heartburn pain.

Hi, everyone,
I started suffering from acid reflux disease more than 9 years ago. I went to a GI specialist and he did the scoping procedure down my throat to look for signs of Barrett's Esophagus, which is a precursor to cancer as you all probably know. It was okay though. I even went to the ER one night thinking I was having a heart attack it was so bad. They hooked me up to EKG machines to look for enzymes that would indicate a heart attack. Of course, it wasn't a heart attack, just a bad case of reflux. I also raised the head of my bed on my doctor's instructions and tried sleeping half straight up in bed. I just stayed awake most of the night still suffering from acid reflux. I was on Prevacid, Prilosec, and Nexium in succession. I could not eat the foods I loved such as Chinese food and Mexican food, my favorites. I want to share with you all now that I can eat what I love and I have been off my acid reflux meds for almost a year now. I eat whatever I want. My doctor couldn't help me in over 9 years. Doctors are not gods, and I just thought that whatever he said I should do because I was taught doctors are gods and they know it all. Well, I have found out there are things they don't know much about and a lot they can do nothing about. The one thing they can do is overprescribe and give us medications which cause more serious side effects which wreak more havoc on our bodies. I have broken the circle of dependence on the drugs (I was also on Prozac, Claritin-D and HRT). My doctor took me off the drugs when he saw I didn't need them anymore. He was astonished, to say the least, but very supportive when he saw it worked. We can take charge of our own health if we want to do it. If you have any questions my e-mail is sb4850@bellsouth.net.

I have just been diagnosed with acid reflux but dont have a burning sensation. Instead I sometimes have a feeling of a lump in my throat or like something is stuck there. Tests have proven that there is nothing there. Does anyone else have these sensations if so please reply. Thank you Lois
Lois, I have that feeling and a lot of belching. Is that acid-reflux too? It started one day about 3 weeks ago , go really bad and now has gone completely away. Is this how this disease works? come and goes? I have no burning pain either. Sometimes food will come back up if I've eaten too much, but it's rare.
