how much pain and swelling?

Linda is home from her lumpectomy.... having a lot of swelling and pain tonight.

She has taken the pain meds and is doing the ice thing... but is still really uncomfortable.

Any advice out there tonight?

Frank, I think the secret is getting the swelling down, and the pain lessens considerably - re my experience. My suggestion would be to keep the ice applied as long as she can, take a break and then put it back on. It's just one of those things that she's going to have to work through. Seems there's nothing easy about this whole disease process.

Frank, all of it sounds very normal. Glenda is right, keep the ice on as long as possible and stay ahead of the pain with the meds. That is so important. For the first couple of days, take the meds as often as presribed, don't let up because it "feels better". I did and it took me awhile to get caught up again. Ice and meds and your attention will pull her through this.

I'm sure by now Linda is feeling much better. I went through two lumpectomies and don't remember being too uncomfortable for long. I bet today she will be up and about. Hugs MK

Frank, my lumpectomies were pretty easy, as long as I did not move too fast or apply pressure. I slept with my arm propped on a pillow for a while. The SNB pain can be worse. Mine hurt only to move the arm, so just resting was ok. I did get some swelling in the node area, I had a little puffy spot, a small sac, for a while. It resolved, no drains and all is well.

The lymph node area is very tender. Keeping the pain under control is key. She should not try to be a hero, if it hurts, take meds. Of course, call the nurse if she cannot tolerate pain or swelling seems unusual.

Of course, I never thought of the SNB I bet that is where the pain is. Lymph nodes made the mastectomy much worse, too. Take good care of her, Frank she is going to need more time than I thought. Hugs MK

Yes, I remember the lymph area to be the worst. It was the hardest to heal, and the most painful. But none of it lasts too long. You got some good advice. Hang in there, and know that the worst of the surgery is behind you.
