hi
i have been on humaria injections for just over a year, but when i had my flu jab in november, within days i had a bad flareup that put me in hospital. i had pulse therapy while there and left feeling great and was put back on methetraxate i was told i the effects of treatment would last 3 months by which time the methretrexate will have kicked in. less that 3 weeks later i had another flare up this time they gave me a kenologue injection which made me feel great for 4 weeks, then i had another flare up, i was given another kenologue injection last week and am feeling much better. i would be interested to know if anyone has suffered flares up following flu jab.
Hi madgirlything and welcome to HW! I'm sorry to hear of your flares... I haven't heard of anyone having a flare after their flu shot, however, I'm sure you're not the only one... I am on Enbrel and I get the flu shot every year, and seem to be ok... good luck to you, and I must say I am curious as to the responses you get! Best of luck to you - Duck

hi ducky thx for your reply. my rhumy nurse told me a couple of other patients had suffered a bit of a flare up after flu jab, but nothing near as bad as me. she said the flu jab kick starts the immune system to produce anti bodies for flu and could have caused orginal flare up.........but dont know why im still getting them. by the way i am a R A suffer, have been for 20 years.
Just curious, as I'm currently taking Humira (2 months now). I thought you weren't supposed to get the flu shot when you were on a TNF-inhibitor? I thought that a common reaction would be a really bad case of the flu because of the increased risks of serious infections. Good information to know, though.

Hi Elcamino
I found your response interesting i am in England and i was told it was important to have flu jab ,as my immune system is knocked down low, due to anti TNF injections and i would not be able to fight flu. I was also told if i had any kind of infection to take anti- biotics straight away. I would be interested to know which country you are in and if different countries give different advice.
thx mad
hello all!
Welcome Mad!
Here's the low-down on vaccinations while on anti-TNF agents. The risk for serious adverse reactions to vaccines applies to "Live-Virus Vaccines." Enbrel & Humira may decrease the response to live virus vaccines and increase the risk of adverse reactions; should not be administered concurrently.
The flu vaccine is made of inactivated variants of influenza type A and B or both dependingon the year.
Those who are immunosuppressed should receive the Flu Vaccine. So if you are taking Humira/Enbrel/....and it was OK by your doc, then it is perfectly fine to have the flu shot. Although, I would tell the doc first before you receive it to make sure you do not have an active infection anywhere.
What a person DOESN'T want to do is recieve a LIVE VIRUS vaccine. Live vaccines are measles, mumps, rubella, Polio. Take caution with pneumococcal, meningococcal vaccines, smallpox, typhoid, varicella zoster & pertussis.
If you did have a flu shot and did have a very bad reaction, you may be allergic to the egg protein that is in it! And given, the flu shot CAN make you feel crappy and sometimes even feel sick, which can bring about a flare. Anything that is introduced into the body of a person with an AI disease can make it go a little haywhire! We must be careful.
Rest well Mad! I hope you are feeling well soon.
Sincerely,
Erin
