Ileostomy/colostomy and diet?

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if/how your diet changed after your surgery.  How long were you on soft foods before you started introducing other foods into your diet again?  Did you notice any differences in terms of things you could eat before and after surgery?  I suppose that would differ from person to person, but I'm just trying to get a general idea.  If you have any advice for me I'd really appreciate it.

PS: my surgery is just 2 weeks away now...I am getting nervous!
Earthgirl, you won't believe this , but I eat pizza the first day out of the hospital. I eat everything and have little problem. Thats the great thing about the operation. Before I would eat bland food like Cream of Wheat and other crappy health food. Today I ate White Castles and cake. I'm loving life. Last weekend I drank 6 beers and eat tacos. The thing I have problems with is popcorn and peanuts. If I eat them , I chew the hell out of them. I have no more pain except a little itch once in a while. Pick your favorite food and get ready to pounce on it after surgery. The best of luck to you and keep me updated. Westy
A few hours after my surgery I was sipping water. The next day I was eating soup, and day by day I graduely started to add more and more foods.Like Westy said you do need to chew certain foods alot more than others. Just increase the foods gradualy and you should be fine.

All the best with your surgery. Are you having an epidurel or the morphine pump? I found the Epidural much better.

Thanks for your responses.  Wow! I was thinking I would be on soft foods for at least a few weeks, but it's good to know it not be quite that long.  Sue, I am going for the epidural so pain management shouldn't be a problem for the first little while.
