I am type 2 diabetic, taking a couple of oral medications and three insulin shots per day. I need to lose weight, and am finding it difficult. Does anyone have suggestions as to how to do it taking insulin? I've heard that diabetic medicines make you gain weight..is that true? Will calorie counting work...if so where do I start calorie wise?
I'd love to see the weight come off!
Dear Tested,
I am losing weight while on insulin, although I've only been on it since April. I use a weight, calorie, data, diary type thing that I found online called CalorieKing. It helps you count what you have eaten so far each day and lets you see where you need to add fiber or protein or whatever you need. I downloaded it for free and used it for 2 weeks and then decided to buy it. It's about $15.
I use bulgar wheat in place of pasta and use a wild rice, brown rice, barley mixture instead of regular rice or potatoes. I have potatoes about once a week but as little as possible. I use real butter on my food in very small amounts. I drink skim milk. I use tortillas instead of bread because they have a great satisfying chewy mouth feel for me and help me stay within my carb allowance. Often for a meal I will forgo my carbs and make a big salad with mustard greens, collard greens, swiss chard, beet greens and romain instead of head lettuce. (Packed full of vitamins and anti oxidents and tons of flavor and fiber as well.) I buy boneless, skinless chicken breast whenever they are on sale and freeze them on a cookie sheet so I can put them in a ziplock bag and take out one whenever I need it. (especially when my fam is having meatloaf = yuck!)
One thing that helps you stay in line is to be sure not to skimp on your good fats. Healthy fats in moderation are good for vitamin absorption, healthy skin tone and regular bowel health. They also delay the stomach emptying time so they delay hunger and make your tummy feel satisfied. I use at least a tablespoon of peanut butter each day either on toast or in my oatmeal. I cook with either peanut oil or olive oil (both are monounsaturated fats) depending upon the cooking temp needed.
I always have fresh fruit in the house and occasionally have a small piece of chocolate to keep me sane. Chocolate is good for your mood and makes you feel like you're being a bit bad, but it's not so bad for you. Hope this helps.
