After reading some posts, I see that there are different measurements involved with blood sugar monitoring. In Australia we are metric and use mmol/L as a measurement, thus;
4.0-8.0 mmol/L is pretty normal
3.5-6.0 before meals and up to 8.0 two hours after meals is ideal
6-7 before and up to 10 two hours after is satistfactory.
I use an accu-chek advantage (although I see the US version has a different casing....or we get old stock!).
So, what are your measurements in and what are your tolerances?
I'm in the UK and it's the same system as Australia - I even think I have the same machine! I'm finding it difficult to understand the US measurements so if anyone can explain it would be great!
I use a Lifescan One Touch Ultra and here in the US that meter and many of the others gives us the ability to choose which system we want to view our measurements in. Buried in the user manual is the way using the buttons to go from our mg/dl system to your mmol/L system. Check your meter manual and see if it will let you change the way you view you readings. now in our US mg/dl system
70-120 FASTING is considered normal
160 and below is what they like to see 2 hours postprandial (after eating)
you can even cheat a bit and if its 180 and on its way down....thats ok if you binged on carbs.
200+ is out of control
60 and below is hypoglycemia and you should go drink something like a coke with LOTTSA sugar to bring your blood sugar back up in short order.
Hope this helps reconcile our numbers to yours

Excellent! Thanks Warren. Now we can be up to speed when the alternative measurements are used. We can also lob our figures into the mix, just to confuse everyone! eg. Last night I scored 6.8, 2 hours after having grilled fish, some salad, a few chips and half a crumbed sausage, with two slices of wholegrain bread. Up to 10 is acceptable and up to 8 is ideal, so despite being a meal with a bit of fat (we've all got to have some fat!) and some hidden sugar, I was pleased with that score.
