mrsa and CF

My 24 year old son who lives with me is going on home IV therapy.  He is due to have a  2 week course of Vancomycin (MRSA)and Tobramycin (for pseudomonas) then back to the clinic for another check up.  He has had the pseudomonas but the MRSA is relatively new.  Can anyone tell me their experiance with dealing with MRSA?  I also have a younger son (by 18 months) also with CF living at home.

Hi Cheryl,

I am so sorry to hear of 2 children with CF. I have twins with CF and this is difficult to deal with.

From working in a laboratory, I do know that MRSA is very hard to get rid of.

Do you have to keep your children apart?

If there is a CURE for Cystic Fibrosis this very moment and this is "not soon enough"...you would hear this twins mom "Across America" "YESSSSSSSSSS"!!.

Besides having separate rooms I do not keep my children or should I say young men.  My older one the one with MRSA however is meticulous and very careful about keeping things clean.  The younger however could care less about these things and doesn’t get the infections the older one does.  Go figure.  Do you keep your twins apart?  If so how do you manage it?

No Cheryl,  I never have kept them seperate from anything.  Now, one time one was sick really bad and he felt bad, so, what I did was kept the sick one in my room and sprayed lysol throughout the house a couple of times a day and the other one never got sick.  I was thinking to myself about what my grandmother always said...spray lysol a day keep the bugs away!.  I am starting to believe this...lol.

On the normal tho, when one is sick....I can expect the other one right behind him to get sick within the next week or so.

My two rarely passes anything back and forth besides the chicken pox, which they shared with their other brother and myself. Also as far as I know (he goes to the clinic when his Pancrease runs out and doesn’t share much information) my younger child with CF does not have pseudomonas or MRSA.

My older son has only one week to go on his IV antibiotics. His Pulmonary functions test is much better but not up to base line. The Doc is saying he thinks it is more the pseudomonas that was the culprit rather then the MRSA.

Have you children ever have IV’s at home? This is my sons second time the last being when he was a bit younger then your children.

Cheryl
No Cheryl....I am a panicky mom and gets ahold of their problems early. We have not been on home antibiotic IV yet.

I AM A 31 YEAR OLD MAIL WITH CF. AND I HAVE MRSA I GO INTO THE HOSPITAL EVERY FEW MONTHS FOR WHAT I LIKE TO CALL TUNE UPS. THEY THEN PUT ME ON I.V. ANTIBIOTICS AND MY TESTS COME BACK POSITIVE WITH MRSA. I DONT BELIEVE THAT IT GOES AWAY FULLY,BUT SMALL AMOUNT STAYS...AND I PRETTY MUCH JUST WAIT FOR THE LEVELS TO GO BACK UP THEN GO IN FOR ANOTHER TUNE UP.. I USED TO LIVE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. BUT RECENTLY MOVED TO HAWAII,WITH MY PARENTS. AND I AM FEELING BETTER HERE THAN IN THE COLDER WINTERS IN CALIFORNIA... DO NOT LET MRSA STRESS YOU OUT.....
