Hi all!
I'm posting because as of late I have been having some pretty rocking episodes of IBS...pain, bloating, gas, naseua. I got into a bad habit a few weeks ago of eating out and that has seemed to trigger it. However, I made dinner last night...Mushroom Marsala Chicken. It seems like whenever I eat mushrooms I get an intense gassy and bloating experience. Last night was the worst episode I've ever had...I even thought about going to the ER because I'm not on meds. It was so painful. As soon as I was able to move my bowels (oh God, I can't believe I'm saying that on a forum) and pass intermittant gas, I had some relief.
Anyway, I was just wondering if shrooms can be a trigger food? And are there any other trigger foods I should be on the look out for? I should mention that the Chicken had wine in it as well as frying the chicken breasts...but I honestly suspect the shrooms because I've had past experiences with eating them and feeling sick.
Looking forward to some feedback!

Oh yeah, anybody have problems with bananas as well?

Hi boo~baby,
Trigger foods are tricky because there are a very few that will effect everyone the same. Some people can eat certain foods with no problems while others get extremely sick from them. I can't really speak to mushrooms, have hated them always and haven't had any since I was a girl. I haven't seen anything where mushrooms are a common trigger food for IBSers but that doesn't mean anything. I would strongly recommend keeping a food diary and listing what you eat (including ingredients) and the effect on you. I have had so much success with this as have others on the forum. Most people on the forum seem to have the worst problems with meats, dairy, nuts, and wheat products. Few however do not have any problems with it. Sorry I couldn't be more concrete in my answer, this has always been such a frustrating subject for everyone.

Several possible triggers.
Wine. alcohol is a big trigger for IBSers
Butter. A lot of marsalas have butter in them, the dairy maybe affecting you.
Mushrooms. Just learned about these and think it has to do with my problems. Fungii such as mushrooms add to yeast buildup in the body. Your IBS may be more of a Candida problem. Excess yeast causes very similar problems to IBS, you should look into it more. Maybe triggers if you have yeast overgrowth are fermented foods, mushrooms, olives, vinegar, SUGAR, fructose, and some fruits and carbs.
Try cutting out some of that and see if it helps
Mushrooms always do me in. Bananas as well. I've noticed that while eating out at any time can trigger a major case of IBS, The menu's don't always include EVERYTHING that actually goes INTO the dish you order, like spices, seasonings etc. Something vague as a dash of chili pepper or cumin can set me off for days.
Best of luck.

Have you tried taking probiotics?
Of all the alcohols, I think wine seems to be 1 of the few IBSers tolerate better. On top of which, after it has been cooked only the flavor is left... no alcohol what-so-ever.

7lil, what are probiotics?
Ocrap, by the way, love the nic. Can you tell me more about candida and where I can find information on it? Thanks :) I didn't get sick until a few hours after eating...which makes me think that's enough time for the shrooms to "ferment" in my gut!

Probiotics are the "good bacteria" our gut needs for proper digestion. You can take them by supplement or by eating lots of yogurt.
Here's a great link for you: What are probiotics?

Thanks 7Lil,
I've had Kefir before, and I just ate some yogurt toay...think I'll buy some more Kefir and try that. I'm also going to look into the Candida syndrome and see what I find.
Thanks :)

Oh I love Mushrooms, but I hate to eat them now :( I swell up, and feel like I am going to pop, and yes bananas do the same things, as well as Ice Cream, but cheese and milk do nothing.
