Do you have any songs or types of music you like to play when you're feeling down? I recall that when I was in the throes of my deepest depression and GAD, I'd listen to a classical music tape I'd made over and over again...one of the songs was Warsaw Concerto. It seemed to match my mood and I always hated when the piece would end. Moonlight Sonata was beautiful and seemed to be sadly, yet gently, caressing my soul. Now, when I get a little down, I like to listen to Woyaya by Art Garfunkel. It's on his Angel Clare cd. It's lovely!!! And there are children singing with him. Most of the song goes like this: "We are going, heaven knows where we are going, we'll know we're there. It will be hard we know...and the road will be muddy and rough, but we'll will get there, heaven knows when we will get there. We know we will." Art's beautiful voice, along with the innocence of the children raisng their voice in song, brings in a feeling of fresh hope and then the background music is lilting, yet spirited...oh, if you can get a chance, you should listen to it! His other songs are great too! On this site, you can listen to samples of songs. If you do listen, also try out "Mary Was An Only Child". It's about a sweet girl that is poor, lonely, and neglected. The last verse says, "And if you watch the stars at night and you find them shining equally bright, you might've seen Jesus and not have known what you saw, but you'd notice a gem in a five and dime store."

Hi Janet,
I couldnt resist replying to this one,
I have music for all moods, Something from the 70s like the carpenters/ Jim Croce/Dylan for when im reflective, Classical for Sunday Morns for my 1-2 hours of just do anything and let myself flow with the story of the music "allows the imagination to create its own story, fly with the violins and fall to earth with the bass" Usually the soppy stuff for when im feeling a bit Blah, and when i get sick of that, something loud, if im angry then i'll get Linken Park out,
I think Music reflects whats in our hearts and souls, but it also reflects the state of our world, and sadly i find much of the music about now is Bass generated, and is so earth bound that we no longer fly with music, well the creative process isn't there anymore, if i can write a dance track in 5 minutes on my computer, i wonder what is creative about that,
Still the greatest music is Nature, the rustle of the wind through the trees, a bird singing in the morning, the sound of a stream,

I have a good reply for this one, as I find the words "Everything will be alright" very comforting. Mary Magdalene's song in Jesus Christ Superstar, "Try not to get worried, try not to turn on to problems that upset you... Everything's alright, yes everything's fine..." and The Killers song Everything will be alright: "Everything will be alright, everything will be alright, everything will be alright." Dave Matthews Band is great "chill" music, and really helps me, allowing me to close my eyes and recenter. The key is finding something that speaks to me, music that I feel in my soul.
Hey, Brownleaf!
I agree with your feelings about the majority of today's music! Even when I was in my teens, I listened to stuff that the other kids would've fled from! So much music today is "computerized cookie-cutter junk"! I like most types of music really---NOT rap!!! UGH!
Later, I'll list some of my fave songs!
Gotta go for now!

This is a good thread Janet, hope a few more add, i think the tastes in music really highlight personalities,
I think Scarlet says it perfectly, "music that speaks to you", and everyone so far has added music that covers the diversity of their personalities,
Janet, i don't mind Rap, i just don't like what you hear on the radio, some of it has a lot to say, but thats the difference between what is manufactured junk and what comes from the heart

I listen to Feels Like Rain by The Grateful Dead, Melissa by The Allman Brothers or something else along those lines. Sometimes bluegrass, you just can't have a sad song once the banjo starts playing.
I love the live version of Bob Seger's "Main Street"...it has nothin' to do with anxiety/depression...it's actually about a guy thinking back on a girl he used to like watch dance in a men's club...(LOL) but it's purdy! I like Dan Fogelburg's "Same Old Lang Syne". The Eagles are my group!!! Yoohoo!!! And Fleetwood Mac! Yea!!

I was driving along listening to the radio today...just loving some alone time! I heard Here Comes The Sun by the Beatles and I felt soo upbeat! Then later, Fast Car by Tracey Chapman came on and I really enjoyed it too...it was raining at this time, the sky very overcast and I thought about how her words seemed so appropriate. It didn't make me sad...just empathetic, I guess.

Well, the only rap I like okay is stuff like Will Smith does. What I abhor is the nasty vile gangsta rap or any that uses profanity and speaks degradingly of people.

Music in relation to depression is very interesting.
For example; I have been playing guitar for over 25 years...if I'm down I don't want to play (when I do I suck IMHO)...if I'm happy or just got lucky or something I'm pretty dam good.
When it comes to listening to music my taste in music totally changes.
Example; I love to play and listen to 70's classic rock (Best music ever) anyway when I'm down I don't listen to classic rock, instead I like to listen to 80's metal (possibly the worst music ever)
What's up with that

Papa,
Maybe it reminds you that things aren't quite as bad...at least, not as bad as that music!!!

Death Cab for Cutie - "Brothers on a hotel bed"
Death Cab for Cutie - "I will follow you into the dark"
Many other songs, but those two will basically represent how you feel. If your feeling real low listen to "That Next Place" from the Meet Joe Black soundtrack. One thing I would advise though... Never listen music because you want to make yourself feel worse. It's alright to listen to a song because you want it to reflect your mood, but don't let it take control of you. Instead try finding a song and making your mood match that. Something like:
Foo Fighters - Monkey Wrench, February Stars, Still, Deepest Blues are Black
Goo Goo Dolls - Sympathy, Stay With You
Rise Against - Give it All, Life Less Frightening, Swing Life Away
Best of luck,
-Dan

Oh! i love the Verve - bitter sweet symphony. Just reminds me that everythings goin 2 be ok in the end.
I am on the other end of this deal. I love music, but there are many times that when I get into the down moods,I play songs that get to my heart and then the end result is me bawling and singing my heart out.
It is good for me sometimes, other times it just brings me down the deep end.
Chronic Depression, Panic Attacks,Anxiety Attacks,Anorexia
