Hello everyone. Feeling a bit nervous about hip surgery. Having been holding off for a few years as have elderly moms. I know by x-ray that I have severe osteoarthritis. However have been suffering with fibromyalgia and scoliosis for years and have high tolerance to pain. I can't take pain meds but can walk for a few miles with just a little discomfort. I am just a bit worried that I might be rocking the boat by having surgery (in three weeks) and have researched and researched but really cannot make up my mind. Can anyone help me here. Thanks so much and I look forward to other opinions.
Hi Wilhar.
My Husband had right hip replacement in October 2020. He was completely bone on bone but refused to seek help until I had recovered from my Total Knee Replacement in January 2020. Once I was recovered he saw the Orthopedist. Although surgery was not what he wanted, surgery was most definitely needed.
Hip Replacements are much easier to recover from than a knee replacement. Everyone is different but he was off any mobility aid at the end of his first week. He went to Physical Therapy although he was told he didn't have to. Physical Therapy(PT) was helpful and he was released from PT in 3 weeks(2 times a week). If you were to ask him if he had to do it all over again his answer would be yes.
My Husband did not need or use pain meds for very long. Most of the pain he had was muscle cramping and muscle spasms (pain meds do not help with that). I would suggest you talk to someone with knowledge in the Orthopedic Office (Dr. or Physician Assistant) about no being able to use pain medication. I would bet they can give you other options for any pain you may have and put your mind at ease. Take care.

I'm 9 days post op. They went in side. I have Crohn's, so surgeon said anyone with autoimmune disease is more prevalent to infection, easier to go back in if needed. It's painful, but I was bone on bone. Standard is 40 5mg of oxycodones. I'll need everyone. I'm doing pt at home. It's a super invasive surgery. I've had to take pain meds about every 4 hrs at first now I can go 6 hrs.
Willowman, do not be concerned about taking the pain medication, the surgeon will stop it before long. Since you are doing PT at home please follow the instructions you've given to the letter.
A very close friend of ours had his hip replaced & he was around 73 or so. He had needed it replaced for years & out of fear he kept putting it off. After surgery, he said he wished he had done it years earlier it would have saved him a lot of grief. The surgeon said his hip looked like a bunch of cauliflower, it was a mess. He was given a sheet of exercises to do at home & did them as instructed, he did not have to go to outside PT. One year after surgery he & his wife got to make a trip to Italy with tons of walking. Without surgery this trip would have never happened.
Keep us posted on how you are doing.

I've had 2 hip replacements, and I can tell you they weren't a big problem. But...
Why would you get a surgery if you feel fine? Walking 1-2 miles "with a little discomfort" sounds tolerable. I would wait until you *felt* you needed it, not just *thought* you needed it based on what other people are telling you. Just my 2 cents.
DX'd Lyme & Babesia in 2009
Main symptom: severe large joint inflammation
Full on ABX w Mepron for a year, did nothing
Immunosuppressants for rheumatoid arthritis for 4 years
Peru jungle medicine
Started Buhner protocol June 2017
Started Buhner Babesia treatment (Cryptolepis, Artemisia) November 2017

PCa history by memory.
Biopsy was around 2019 G6 in 6 cores no second opinion OncotypeD X listed as very low risk
Second biopsy showed increase but all still G6 but second However second opinion at John's Hopkin's showed one of the now 8 positive as G7
One core was 50% one core was 25% the rest low
Started radiation but 4th caused retention to paraphimosis
Settled on SBRT Sept 2021

I would not have surgery until absolutely necessary. If I was able to walk a few miles without much discomfort, I would hold off - JMO. Also, how much does your scoliosis play into your discomfort?
Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Had a second hip surgery and the pain this time was pretty bad.
Almost 3 weeks old now and weirdly the pain is in knee and calf and front of leg.
Really hard time sleeping but feeling better during the day.
I've over stayed my buprenorphine as it is not working and I'm on a huge dose.
Feeling sorry for myself but hope time and PT help
