Hi all,
I was just wondering from those that have had the subtotal coloectomy procedure if after the surgery they had to have an ileostomy bag? I thought I heard it was a 2 part procedure where you had to have the bag attached for a while, while the small bowel and the rectum heal, but it sounds like people on this site did not have bags after surgery. Your input is appreciated. Thanks
Hello,
you can have a subtotal and be connected. It depends why you're having the surgery. I had a total with ileo/rectal anastamosis (reconnection) but I perforated after surgery so they went back in and now I have a temporary ileostomy. I go back to surgery in Feb. If the damaged colon is removed and what is left is healthy, they should be able to anastamose the ileum to the rectum.
What's your diagnosis, if you don't mind me asking? With Crohn's and UC, the damaged tissue has to be removed. Colonic inertia should still have healthy colonic tissue.
Hope this helps. Post any other questions and we'll try to help.

Hey there! Depending on your reasons for the surgery, there shouldnt be a reason to have to jump straight into an ostomy if you just have constipation.
Check out total colectomy parts 1-7. I had the surgery in July of this year and I am doing great. Full colectomy with a ileorectal anastomosis.
If I can help in any way, let me know... I remeber the feelings you are going through!
Hugs,
Emma
