Hello to all- I am having some of the worst pain I have ever had in my life from Acid Reflux!! I was in the hospital two weeks ago with it and the pain has only given me two days relief!! The pain comes every 20 minutes to and hour and was every hour last night so I got no sleep at all!!! I am affraid to eat or drink anything! I can't go to the Doctor til next week.Is there anything I can do to stop the heart attack feeling til then??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Thank You!!!

Sorry you are having such discomfort! Have you tried drinking a mint-based tea? I know that can sometimes help calm acid, for me, anyway! Also, I know this is an elementary question, but have you tried OTC acid relievers? I know Rolaids just came out with a new product, "Soft Chews", which may provide some relief for you.

Just remembered, you may also want to try chewing some gum (although not cinnamon, as it would probably enhance your discomfort). Supposedly, it creates more saliva which helps wash acid down into your stomach.

Thanks for the advice.I have tried the new rolaids soft chew and it did no good at all. My hubby is going to get me some Prilosec OTC on his way home from work tomorrow.Hopefully that will help. I also tried the gum,didnt work either.I ate a piece of toast and not ten minutes later I had an attack.This is really starting to get on my nerves!! Can stress bring this on?? Am I making it worse by getting so upset over it. I dont have the tea you mentioned,would green tea work? Sorry so many ??? I am new to this. Thanks so much!!!
Sorry it wasn't any useful advice! :( Yes, stress tends to be acid's best friend. I usually get awful heartburn & stomach ailments when I'm stressed. But I know it's hard to NOT worry and stress when you haven't felt well for so long!! Green tea should be great, in fact, its renowned for its help with your tummy & digestive system.
Have you tried sleeping sitting up? I know it sounds uncomfortable, but sometimes I've had to sleep like this to get relief from acid so that I could get some shut-eye.

Thanks Toni,I will be drinking some green tea in just a few minutes!! I slept in my husbands reclyner last night and it did help.I finally got some sleep.He brought me home some Prilosec last night so we are just praying it kicks in soon!!! Things were so bad last night that I had to vomit!!! Never done that before,and boy did it ever burn my chest!! What was that all about??? Hope you are doing well and thanks again!!!

I'm so sorry! I've never actually had to throw up, but I've come close, so I can imagine how you feel! In fact, I usually get nauseous immediately preceding my heartburn, but it goes away. Not to sound gross, but was it food or just bile you vomited? Because if it were just bile, that would definitely tear your chest & throat up! I really wish I could remember the prescription that I took when I had bile troubles, it really helped .. I might have record of it, I'll take a look tonight and let you know.
Glad the recliner helped you get some rest! And I hope the tea and Prilosec help!
Right now, I'm taking a medicine called Zegerid - it's a powder that you mix with water and drink. It's basically a PPI, but it's more effective than the pills (Nexium, Prevacid) I have taken before. Is your Dr's office close? Maybe they could give you some samples to tide you over until your visit. I am taking it 2xday, morning & night, and my heartburn is barely noticeable.
I really hope you feel better soon .. I'm thinking of you!!

I think something is helping.I havent had a SEVERE attack in almost two hours and it has been every 20-30 mins. I am almost affraid to say anything!!! Am starving right now but affraid to eat anything!!!! Maybe I will try a piece of bread. I appreciate your support more than you know!!!!

Okay, the medicine my Dr. prescribed for my bile is called Metoclopramide (Reglan) and I was taking 10mg 4xday. Try and see if your Dr. can get you something along those lines. It took a couple of days to kick in as I recall, but once it did, I was a happy puppy!

Which do you prefer, of the places you've lived? I've always thought TX seemed like a really great place to live, nice & warm. I'm a freeze-baby!

I'm sorry you're hungry. I know exactly how you feel! I've had days where I'm so frustrated & afraid to eat, too! Bread's usually a good food, because it's supposed to 'soak up' the acid. At least that's what I always thought!

This is my first post on healingwell.com. I am learning a lot by reading about other people who are suffering from GERD/acidreflux/heartburn.
I have been frustrated searching the Net for ACTIVE message boards. Seems like so many messages are from one, two, or three years ago and there is no way for current communication.
I have some questions for anybody who might know the answers and wants to share.
Does anyone have horrible bad breath with their reflux?
Is there such a thing as "acid fumes" coming from the stomach even though a person might not ever feel liquid?
If a person's LES is working OK, is it impossible to get acid reflux or acid fumes?
How long does it take for Barrett's esophagus to develop?
How many skinny people have reflux and GERD?
Is GERD and acid reflux one and the same?
I think this is enough for the first post.

I personally do not have bad breath, but wouldn't doubt that could be a side effect from acid reflux.
As for the 'acid fumes', I'd imagine you could have that. I rarely have bile, but often have heartburn.
I also think that you can have acid reflux even with your LES sphincter working perfectly, although when it DOESN'T work well, you're liable to feel much worse (as I'm sure you know!).
I'm not sure how long it takes Barrett's Esophagus to develop. I know that if you have GERD, you are more likely to get Barrett's, but on the same note, you can have GERD forever and NOT get BE, too.
As far as I know, GERD & Acid Reflux are one in the same.
And I am probably considered 'skinny' (5'6", 120 lbs), and I've had GERD since I was 15 (8 years).

Hi Toni,Well,The hubby had me in the ER Friday night and they put me on previcid and Carefate to help any ulcers that may be there or may develope.At least I can eat now.I take the carefate 1 hour before I eat.I got to sleep in bed last night!!!!!!! YIPPIE with no problems!!!! So far so good!!! Hope you are feeling good today!

From what I have read about GERD, your being slim is to your advantage. I have about 16 pounds to lose and while I don't think weight causes GERD, it apparently can certainly contribute to the symptoms.

I fell asleep with my son last night, so I slept right through the Super Bowl! How was it? Any memorable commercials?
I've heard that about TX, also about W.VA. My friend is from W.VA and she said Ohioans are some of the rudest people she's ever come across! I'd probably love living in a place like TX, with all the kind people, but my all of my family is in OH, so I'll probably stay here.

Whats left of my family is still in Ohio also.Both my parents are gone now so really have no desire to ever go back there.I forgot to say anything about Az. I suppose that say's enough right there huh?? LOL
The super bowl didnt go my way but oh well!!! As for the commercials,well,they werent that great this year.

I'm so sorry, Carolyn! :( Did anything stressful happen yesterday? Or maybe it was something that didn't agree with you? After having a good weekend, I know you've got to be feeling really upset! How are you this afternoon? Any better/worse?
I'm sorry about your parents. Truthfully, apart from my parents, my Grandparents are why I'm still here. I'm sure I'll stay here even when they pass, but they're just really special to me and I want to be close to them.
I'm glad you at least had a nice night last night, despite the outcome of the game :)
Still feeling a bit icky, but not bad like this weekend. I was on medicine for the cramping, Pamine Forte, but it gave me really awful sharp pains and I couldn't function. I'd had over a month of relief (from the cramping) but most recently stopped taking the Pamine, and had an 'attack'. Think I will call my Dr. and see what else he can prescribe.
