no pain no gain?

saw a nutritionist yesterday to get advice on controlling my high cholesterol and acid reflux. between the two, it would appear i can eat nothing, especially everything i like. i have no noticeable symptoms from the gerd, so how does one decide what bothers the gut or not? she also advised me to eat about 5 small meals, making life even more confusing. are there any good books out on gerd?

forgot... i'm 56 years old and 5'3" weighing in at 101 lbs. won't this avoiding everything make me even thinner?

Hey Linda, am glad to see that you went to the nutritionist. It would seem that there is nothing left to eat. ha ha But there is-so don't lose hope! The advice on the several small meals is the best advice. I've found that it's not always what I'm eating (tho sometimes it is), but how much I'm eating of it. You're weight tells me that you've got the opposite problem of most people so you must be careful not to lose anymore, cuz that certainly won't help your situation. As far as books? I can't recommend one off hand, but there certainly is lots of info on line to read. Hope you are doing better! Teri
Hey linda,
I had the same issues, eating 3 medium meals would make me suffer through pain throughout the day. I bought a mini-fridge for my office and keep snack foods in it.....I eat maybe 10 times a day! About once an hour just eat some fruit, crackers, or snack-bars. You can still get all of your calories in without big meals. When dining out, eat 1/3 of your meal, box up the rest and enjoy a few hours later. It feels like all you do is eat, but do it while doing other tasks. Eat while reading, watching tv, I eat during company meetings:) As for the high cholesterol....best advice, become a vegetarian. They have little to no cholesterol, live longer lives, and avoid many other health complications. For a very good book on nutrition, try: Diet for a New America by John Robbins. As for GERD, like teri said, the best place is the internet.
