Numb Thigh

Hello All,

Does anyone have an issue with one of their thigh's being numb.  Mine has been numb for about 2 years now.  It's numb on the outer side about 2 inches wide and about 4 inches long. I guess my Rumy doesn't seemed to concerned about it. I've been living with it for so long I sometimes forget about it.
It's really weird, it's always numb and sometimes when I sleep on it, it really hurts, it actually wakes me up.

Any ideas?

Thanks Zippy,

I have the exactly same problem in my right thigh. I had an Angiogram done a couple years ago and the puncture site was on my right side, so i never really thought to much about it. Pinched nerve or something from the Angiogram i thought. Weird.

Hi Zippy!

wow, this must be very annoying!  ok....i do not have a problem like this, but i do have some thoughts to throw out here to maybe shed light on a few things.
i see you have sacroiliasitis; my initial thought would be that this inflammation may be impingeing on the lower  base of the vertebral column and hitting some nerves (kinda like sciatica) and thus causing focal numbness.

my other thoughts would be to ask you if you have any peripheral neuropathy.  that can cause pain, tingling, numbness.  do you have diabetis?

peripheral artery disease can cause some numbing problems, but typically is more common in the lower extremities like your legs and feet.

is this feeling truly NUMB?  like if i were to stick you with a pin...would you feel it?  is it like a frozen numb?  does it burn?  feel like pins n' needles?  or like ants crawling under your skin?

did you ever have shingles?

do you have a psoriatic lesion or patches in that area?

this is most likely nerve related or small vessel related i would think.

if you go to a neurologist, they can run many neuromuscular tests, EMGs and EEgs and all sorts of studies to find out if this is a damaged or inflammed nerve.  i would definitely consult with a neurologist.  after that...if they cannot find anything, i would consult with a cardiologist if you are still worried.

best wishes Zippy.

Hey Erin,
Thanks for the thoughts.
It is really like frozen numb. When I shave my legs, I don't feel the razor going over that area.
I have a follow up appt. with my GI and I have made an appt. with my PCP for a full physical. I will start with them and see what they say.
I havn't had any major pain in my sacroiliatic joints since I started Remicade so I would think there's no inflammation down there. But who knows.
Thanks again for your ideas.

Hi Zippy,
I seem to have a similar thing to yourself. It was 15 years ago when I fell badly with all my weight onto my left thigh onto a parquet floor. I was in excruciating pain. When that subsided I have been left with a numbness along the outer thigh which I've had every since. Recently I've found that if I happen to sleep on that area, I have an unbearable pain, I have to massage it to help ease the pain. I will be seeing my GP but it's a funny thing to try and explain as there are no outward signs of anything wrong. Does yours relate to a past injury?
I hope the GP has an answer, I'll keep you posted.

Good luck

Sandy
I have had this same pain for over twenty years and I finally went to a Pain Mangement Dr. and was told it is a maraglia not sure of speilling but it is caused by a pinched nerve usually in the groin area. I take neurotin for it and it helps. Mine hurts more when I am just standing and I have to put Ice on it to releive the pain.
Good morning, :-)

For all of those suffering from numbness in the thigh, I have suffered with it also, and finally got relief.

Go into Google and key in "Meralgia Paresthetica", this is my diagnosis and I sure hope you get relief also. Mayo Clinic had great descriptions for the pain.

I take one pill a day for relief, If I miss one day the pain comes back. No more sleepless nights, no more pain in the thighs, no needles and pins shooting into my thighs and all of the other symptoms that I told the doctors I had.

I am no longer a "Charlie Brown" AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH when the pain hits!!!
yeah
I am so glad I browsed here today. Thanks for posting about the numb thigh. And thanks jami for the information on Meralgia Paresthetica. I first experienced this years ago when my left thigh would feel numb and worried me quite a bit. Painful too. I asked a doctor about it and he had no idea what it was. When I was working , I kept my wallet in the front pocket of my jeans. The buldge of the wallet on my thigh must have pressed against that nerve and caused the problem. After awhile, I learned to not keep the wallet in the front pocket of the jeans. My numbness and pain came and went for years and I recently felt it again. I suppose it will be with me forever. I have the greatest sympathy for all of you who suffer continuously. I hope you will find relief now that you know what it is. And like Mr. Doubt says....keep the pressure off of the bad area. I just realized that my pain and numbness comes back when I carry a lot of stuff in the left front pocket of my jeans. So we have to keep the pressure off the thigh.

I too had the numbness and pain in my right thigh for about 20 years, my neurologist told me what it was, tried cortisone injection, didnt help much, so I opted for surgery to cut the nerve, was a very good choice, after a few months of the nerve dying it doesnt bother me in the least any more.   :)

Diagnosed with DDD, Tarsal Tunnel, 3 Herniated discs, Arthritis in hands. Asthma, Hypertension, Diabetes.
Currently on 75 mcg Duragesic Patch, Neurontin 4800 mg daily, Relafen 1500mg daily, Lexapro, and have SCS unit for leg pain.

             PAIN SUCKS :(

I am told it is the obutrater nerve, and mine bothers me all the time right side, they say is actaully orginating from you lumbar area, thats why some docs say the cortizone shot, didnt help me either, opting for the nerve being burned off sounds lke my best bet. I have suffered with abotu 2 years now, strange as my back has worsened in the last years i have had nerves breuned in my back to only help temporarily.

It might be PAD-peripheral artery disease. Please have it checked out. My Mom ignored numbness and tingling in her thighs and ended up having a heart attack. Good luck! :)
I have had this for a few years now, I went to the doctor and all she said was its a trapped nerve and will go away if I lose weight! She was of no help at all so I just deal with it, but the advice on here has been really useful. I always wear trousers and jeans which can sometimes be a little tight round my waist (to keep them up lol) but that may be why sometimes it numbs a lot and sometimes I don't even think about it (I've got so use to it). I will see if wearing looser clothing helps, though I do already do the whole "go to sleep naked" thing ;) x
My right thig is still othering me, they stil they pain is originating from my lumbar area, I dont know. My burns sometimes. Could be perphial neurapthy, i donthave diabetes, but i do have neurapthy.

I have had numbness in my right thigh since I was a teenager. It has come and gone all of these years. Lately, it has been acting up very much. I am so glad I came upon this site and found a possible cause to this (Meralgia Paresthetica). When I read about this condition, it was almost spot on as to what I have been experiencing. I hope now I will be able to manage this.
confused  Hey.  I have had outer thigh numbness, tingling, burning, and itching since 2004 when i was pregnant. It started in one thigh, then in the other after my kid was born. It hasn't gone away. Hurts really bad sometimes. I can also shave right over the area (spans middle of thigh to outer thigh, and above knee to 8-12 inches up) and can't feel a thing. I've heard it is because of a pinched nerve.  Not sure. Never seeked treatment. Nice to know others feel my "pain".  Think is it time for me to go to a Dr.  Hurts standing, laying down, even sitting.

I am 28 years old and have no medical conditions, but the other day I fell asleep with my leg elavated and in an uncomfortable position. When I woke up my knee was in pain and I quickly put my leg down and have experienced pain and a strange numbness in my knee and the right side of my thigh ever since.  It's been about a week.  What should I do?
Firstly, welcome 'almost30' to the site, it's a wonderful place to ask questions.

As for your condition, it's always been my experience that if you are suffering in any way shape or form for over a week, it's always best to get it checked out by a medical professional!

Could be nothing, but then again you won't know until you ask someone.
Lets hope it's nothing, do let us know how you went.

RE: Meralgia Parestheticia

Nice how a google search for 'numb thigh' can lead some assurance. The most likely answer is often correct.

My numb thigh is outer right side, approximately mid thigh... which...

Makes perfect sense. I wear a 4 point fall arrest safety harness & lanyard for most of my time at work. And, for several years have foolishly worn my wallet in my right pocket. The sweat pants I wear for work place my wallet exactly at the location of the numbness, with the right leg strap of the safety harness providing the constriction and as I suspect, subsequent nerve damage.

I notice it most when I lay down on my couch, to watch tv. I am on my right side, and the mild pain or numbness, something like a sleeping limb, is worst then.

Happy New Year to all.
Hi There,
I have had numbness, cold burning, tingling sensation in my left thigh. It began 2 years ago , just a small area and is now about 2 inch by 4 inch and is constantly numb. Its worse when i stand or walk.I have had to constantly  ask my doctor to let me see a specialist as he seems to think this is nothing.
I have had a nerve conduction test which shows some loss of nerve.
I was diagnosed with Meralgia Parethetica ( this is not) as i have had a MRI scan and there  is no nerve trapped. I was then given a steroid injection into my groin, no change then given another , the pain went but the numbness stayed. After 4 weeks the pain came back but worse. I am now being refered to a pain clinic, not sure they can help.
Someone mentioned that it could be my thyroid, i do have an underactive thyriod but taking throxine.

I feel the nerve is numb for a reason .. i just need to know the cause???? cry
I am so amazed and actually a little comforted that I am not the only one with this problem. I have had the numbness and pain in my right thigh for 2 yrs now. Doctors kept telling me it was nothing or some even said pulled muscle. I have tried stretches and exercise and this did not work. Sometimes the pain worsened while doing this. I have lost some strength in my thigh and in my line of work I really need all my leg strength but always seem to pass my physical by using my left leg to lift myself up during testing.

Anyway with all the new info I have received here I am making an appointment with a new doctor first thing in the morning and having it checked out, and I even think I'll throw some of you findings at him so I don't get a "it's nothing and will go a way in time" nono
I think 2 yrs + is long enough.

Thank you for the info.
