Is there anyone else with Oral Allergy Syndrome?

Until you brought this to my attention, I personally had never heard of this!  I did a bit of research so myself and others would know what this is...
"Food allergies can develop later in life. But if you have respiratory allergies, you may be having a reaction called oral allergy syndrome. Many people with respiratory allergies develop itching around the mouth after eating certain fruits. Cross-reactions between some pollen and fruits cause this.

Usually, oral allergy syndrome is a mild form of food allergy. It rarely causes a severe reaction. If you have itching or hives all over your body after eating fruit, talk to your doctor. This may indicate a more serious problem."

Hello Teri! I am doing fine. I was curious to know if anyone else has Oral Allergy Syndrome. I don't know of anyone else. I also have asthma and allergic rhinitis. This season has been absolutely dreadful!!

Hi Teri and Bmbdigity!!!

I'm not really sure what Oral Allergy Syndrome is, but for the last year and half since I've become allergic to most foods, fruits, etc. I have had a rash around my nose that seems to flare up more when I've been in the sun.

 

I really think it's caused by allergic reactions.

Hmm... I didn't know "itchy mouth" feeling actually had a name! Nice to know I'm also not alone :) I get itchy mouth sometimes from fruits, its very annoying because I love fruit! My other food allergy, tree nuts, also gives me an itchy mouth and sometimes hives on my lips. Very annoying, but much more mild than my one-time anaphylactic reaction. I also have hay fever and all that, so its curious to see that with respiratory allergies that pollen from fruits can actually be causing the itchy mouth. Interesting!

I went to the Dr.awhile ago.He said I have an allergy to something.My face is swelled up,lips too.Can't think of anything I've eaten in the last week.
Around my mouth has water scabs,the more i take them off the more that spread.I had food allergies as a kid,anything acid would break me out,but not around the mouth or face.It itches terribly.

Gosh, I am sorry to hear this!!  Just be careful about tearing your skin - that wouldn't be a good spot for infection to set in.  Have you been seen recently by a Dr. for this?  I would most definitely let him, or her take a look at this and perhaps they can give you something to soothe it.

I saw a Dr this afternoon.Talked to my Dr.this eve.he said for me to come in tomorrow if things arent better after having the steroids.

My lips are normal again,still have crusts around my mouth.Still hurts to eat,but was able to take my medications.I still have an appt.on Tues to see my Dr.so will go then for sure.

Yea!  SnowyLynne, I'm happy to hear that it sounds as if it might be trying to clear up!  Let them heal naturally, it might help clear them up quicker and please let me know how you are doing and what the Dr. tells you on Tuesday!! tongue

The sides of my face still swollen so will see the Dr this afternoon.

It hurts too much to eat so If I can't get it thru a straw,forget it,lol.Been keeping vasoline around my mouth to keep the crusts from getting so hard.

Well the Dr gave me some carafate/lidocane to slosh around my mouth & lips,which helps.We went uptown to eat & had an omelet,soft cooked hashborowns.Tasted great,but the numbness wore off so now my mouth is on fir,lol.time to ricse again.I go back on Tues.

Hi.  I too have OAS.  I just found this out a couple of months ago.  A little over a year ago, I ate an apple with peanut butter and my throat swelled up to where I was gasping for breath.  I called my mom to ask her what to do(and I could barely talk) and she suggested drinking a soda.  That did the trick, thank goodness she knew what to do!  Anyway, I thought I was allergic to peanut butter and stopped eating it.  Coincidentally, I didn't eat apples after that either, and then recently someone told me about OAS.  When I looked it up on the internet, it described the symptoms(itchy hands when peeling raw fruit, itchy throat when eating raw fruit) of which I have had for a while.  I never heard of OAS, but I am so glad I was told about it.  Glad to know there are others out there with it too.  I am so disappointed that I can't eat the fruits that I love anymore.  Yesterday I ate cherries and my throat got itchy, and today I ate a plum, which my throat is still itching from.  That is what brought me to this site today.  I guess I have to keep a list now of fruits to avoid sad
