Hi:
Not sure if this is the right forum to post this, but it's the only forum with "osteo" in it!
I'm a 50 year old guy recently diagnosed with significant osteopenia AND kidney stones. The bone doctor says I should take calcium and Vitamin D supplements to help strengthen my bones. However, the kidney stone doctor says I should NOT take calcium and Vitamin D supplements because they cause kidney stones in susceptible people.
Anybody else have this and what do you do about it?
Thanks!
I am where you are. I had calcium oxalate kidney stonbes in the '80s. I was told not to take calcium supplements and to limit the amount of calcium in my diet. I did just that for 25 years until it was discovered I had osteoporosis. With that information I began researching and discovered that things have evolved since I was treated 30 years ago.
So first, what type of stones do you have? That will determine what dietary changes you need to prevent making more stones. I assume you have calcium oxalate stones given your kidney doctor said no to the calcium sopplements.
It is imperative that you drink plenty of water each day to prevent stone formation.
There is really good information about kidney stones at the following site. Pay particular attention to the part about calcium and oxalate and how it works. http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/pubs/kidneystonediet/index.aspx#quantity
I have been able to stablize my ostepososis progression by adding calcium to my diet via food. According to the above web site, some researchers say taking the supplements with a meal will negate the stone building. I know how painful those dang stones are. The first one I passed was way more painful that the birth of my child. So not wanting to risk another kidney stone is understandable.
Sorry for rambling so...just thought I would let you know you aren't alone with this problem.

Hello,
I just joined this site, and I also have calcium oxalate kidney stones and recently diagnosed with osteoporosis. My Dr. feels that due to my stopping calcium supplements and not getting enough calcium with my diet, that I have caused my bones to lose density. I had myself a little pity party after that, and started researching diets for improving osteoporosis DEXA scans. Unfortunately, there is so much confusing and contradictory information out there, that I am having a difficult time developing a diet plan. All of the good foods for bone building (large leafy greens etc.) are bad for a low oxalate diet. Could you please let us know how you were able to stabilize your osteoporosis and avoid kidney stone formation at the same time?
Also, I have resolved not to go on the bone drugs because I believe I can improve with diet, exercise and supplements, so I am extremely interested as to what your meals plans are, and anything else you are doing. Thank you

I know this forum is quite old but just wondering if any of you have found any new information about osteoporosis and kidney stones. I have formed calcium stones since I was 20 years old so stopped eating/taking calcium rich food/supplements for 38 years and was just diagnosed with osteoporosis (initial stages). I have formed stones my entire life so reduction of calcium did not seem to work. Last CT scan showed 3 stones in each kidney. I am at my wits end to figure this out and 3 urologists, 2 nephrologists and 2 endocrinologists have not come to any conclusions of a protocol to assist with this issue. I feel like I am on my own so want to get more proactive in healing myself now with this new diagnosis.
