PAIN UNDER RIGHT RIB

Hi,
 
All weekend I ve ahd pain under my right rib which gets worse when  walk.  Its like a constant stitch.
Th doc thinks its just a pulled muscle cos she said she couldnt feel anything wrong.  Im prob just worrying abt nothng (as I always do!!).  It s a really wierd pain tho but I was wondering if it could be related to my IBS ????

Why doesn't your doctor think it's your gall bladder? That will hurt right under your right rib. There are usually other things that accompany it--nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, yellow/burning stools--but some people just have pain. Most people also get very tender there to press on it, but I never did, so that's not always a sure-fire sign.

Does it just hurt or do you feel like you have a lump in there too? The lump-feeling would be more noticable when you're sitting down. That's another sign of a bad gall bladder; you will really feel its presence there because it's swollen or even just because it's hurting.

No I dont have a lump and the doctor pressed there and said she couldnt feel anything so it was prob just muscle strain. I t hurts more when i walk - feels likea constant stitch.

Well, if you do develop nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, a sudden feeling of being very full, even when you have only eaten a bite or two, an inability to lie flat on your back because it makes the pain worse and/or makes you more nauseated, then go back to the doctor and make her run an actual test on your gall bladder. Mine was bad for 5 years before I ever developed the lump feeling. You can't diagnose a gall bladder by pressing on it anyways. That it's tender there can be a sign, but that it's not tender there doesn't mean anything; like I said I never got tender. For that matter, I never hurt specifically on my side, so I can't really tell you what that feels like; I always hurt right across the middle. I usually walked, though, because it made the pain and cramping loosen up a little.

I get pain in my left side just under the ribs--be diagnosed as a pulled muscle from carrying my son on that hip 20 years prior!!!!!  That doctor was a real genius, huh???

Turned out that it's my colon pinching off--no MDiety has diagnosed it as such but I came across a Gastro site that showed how our colons pinch down when they make the curve both on the left and right side.  I'm sure that's my problem so I don't worry about it.

Hi i have been getting a pain under my right side of rib i am verry scaird. I have looked it up on the internet and i think it might be pulled muscle, I am still scaird tho i am only 16 confused sad

Welcome to HealingWell. It's nice to have you. Have you mentioned this pain to your parents? If it's recurring, you'll probably want to get it checked out by a doctor. I know that's not a lot of comfort, but try not to worry so much. It probably is a pulled muscle or something equally minor, but going to the doctor and having it checked will ease your mind.

I have also had a pain on my right side under my rib for about 3 months so far. I had my blood taken by my family doc and I believe it was for my liver function....it turned out normal. However, that was three months ago and I still have pain. Gallblader problems run in my family, I wonder if I should go back to the doctor??? The pain is not there all day, however, several times throughout the day.

Hey all,

I sometimes have pain under right rib. I believe it is because I have IBS. I just believe that's where my pain is at that time. I get different places where I have pain. Sometimes stomach. mostly under ribs. Unfortunately I have panic attacks n chest pain. IBS is sure not fun to have thats for sure. I never know when I will have pain or where.  I wish you all well..hugs...Lora

I too have IBS and Acid Reflux. Plus the pain in my right rib. My MD did alot of tests and they all came back negative. He says there's nothing wrong with my gallbladder. It still hurts though. I dont' know what else it could be. Any ideas?

For those with IBS related pain on the right side, it might be helpful to bear in mind that the twists and turns of the colon are often the places where gas and stool get "trapped".  Many folks complain of pains specific to either right or left sides and you can see by the diagram that the bends in the instestines extend up under the ribs.

My GI doc and naturopathic doc explained that the localized pain we often feel in those areas could be "stuff" trying to make it's way through the turns.  On the right side, we obviously have to be aware of the gall bladder and the appendix.  But for those of us missing those organs, or those who've had them checked and cleared, it could be this issue.

Yeah, I heard that for 5 years until, whoops, it IS bad! Fixed my problems when they took it out, so you know it had been bad all that time.

Hi Keriamon,

I am interested in your story. I am assuming you were diagnosed with IBS, but 5 years later found it was the gallbadder that needed to be removed. I am curious why did they not find this out when they first did testing? Second how come 5 years went by than it was discovered it was your gallbladder. Also, do you still have pain? I am just trying to understand if perhaps I have been misdiagnosed, not necessarily with the gallbladder, but with whatever is causing my pain. Thanks...Lora

Maybe it's kidney stones. That organ is on either side of your ribs. If you have kidney stones...you will know it.

Well, I finally had my doctors appointments.  I had more bloodwork and an ultrasound.  They found nothing.  However, my doctor sent me to and ENT because I have had a constant sore throat.  Come to find out I have Acid Reflux.  I am kind of thinking now that is part of my pain under my ribs.  So now the Dr. put me on Prilosec.  The pain under my rib has eased up a little thank goodness.
