PD = Retirement+SSDI?

Hello, this is my 2nd post here so I'll try not to confuse you.

I have 3 conditions going on with me. I have cervical degenerative disk c3-4 & c6-7. My spine doctor say's I don't need surgery yet. He sent me to PT for 3 weeks, which didn't do much for me. I couldn't stand the pain all day long at work, so before they fired me I had my chiropractor take me out of work on State disability. During the last 4 month of being out of work the cycle of anxiety & depression got so bad I was referred to a Physcologist for an evaluation. She told my Pain Management doctor that I have an anxiety disorder. My Pain management doctor I forgot to mention gave me an epidural and was doing "Prolothearpy" (ligament strengthening injections, which became harder to give to me. Well I have noticed that my right leg & hand/arm. Shake all the time now, so I was sent to a Neurologist 2 weeks ago. He diagnosed me with PARKINSON'S! He put me on Mirapex that day. I have so much going on now I'm just confused on what to do.

I have enough time in my job to draw a $$ retirement from them. I called SSA and they mentioned I might be eligible for SSDI but I forgot to fine out if I will be able to collect that & my job $$ retirement.

Someone told me that I couldn't get SSDI + have retirement income? This has been a stressing thing to me, since I didn't have anything wrong with me for the 32 years I worked. I'm 53 yrs old & if I did retire, I wanted it to be healthy. Now I can't get a second retirement going, due to the conditions I have...heck I cab barely make it through a day let alone work. The way I see it I'm defiantly disabled, so I shouldn’t have to wait until I'm 62 or 66 yrs old to collect SS or SSDI.

My question is am I going to be able to get SSDI have a job retirement also. The Union says yes? What's your opinion? sad

I'm so sorry to hear about all your health problems.    They say these are the golden years.  ha.  for whom?
Sounds like you have a lot going on right now.   I'm sorry I can't help you.    I collect s. s.  and a retirement amount that is very small, but it was before I was diagnosed with PD.    Good luck to you.  and GOD Bless.

Ce ,I'm always confused.lol.I know you can collect ssdi and private long term disability.I assume you can also collect regular retirement as well as other income; with ! dolla r of every 2 you earn going back to ss,with a 10,000 income exclusion.So with a 20000 retirement you would pay 5000 to ss.When you apply for ssdi they will explain this to you.
Anxiety unfortunately i often occurs with PD,and your neurologist can help with this.Stay well and let us know how you are doing Ed

MY HUSBAND HAS PD AND IS COLLECTING HIS RETIREMENT PENSION AND ALSO SSD. HE QUALIFIED FOR SSD AND WAS OUT OF WORK SICK AND WE WERE TOLD BY SSD FOR HIM TO RETIRE SEEING HE COULDNT' WORK ANYMORE AND NOW HE COLLECTS BOTH WHICH HE IS ENTITLED TO. HOPE THIS HELPS CE WITH HER QUESTIONS
Miskel thank you so much for replying to my post. I'm glad to hear your husband didn't have any problem getting both, SSDI & Retiremnt. I' filed back in Oct for ths SSDI and haven't heard a thing from them. My doctors say, they have asked for my records so maybe progress is being made. I'm hopinig to get it on the first try but from what people say it's not likely. I have yet to file my retirement papers. I will then have a different medical plan with higher cost and not as good of coverage. As far as my condition with my  neck, it's still very sore & painful...not that I'm complaining! My Parkinson's is still there with the tremors but I have found a lot of support groups on the internet which has helped out.

Thanks again for the post.

HI CE

MY HUSBAND ALSO HAS NECK PROBLEMS, HE GOT IT ON THE FIRST TRY WHICH I WAS TOLD BECAUSE OF THE PD BEING INCURABLE THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. BUT YOU WILL HAVE TO RETIRE BEFORE THEY GIVE YOU THE SSD. THIS IS HOW IT WENT FOR US. THE GUY FROM SSD CALLED AND SAID THAT THERE WAS A 6 MONTH WAITING PERIOD IN OTHER WORDS YOU GO 6 MONTH WITH NO PAY, MY HUSBAND HAD BEEN OUT OF WORK FOR A YEAR EVEN THOUGH THE COMPANY WAS PAYING HIM THEY DIDNT' CONSIDER THIS. SO THE GUY SAID THAT THE FIRST 6 MONTHS WAS THE WAITING PERIOD AND HE HAD A CHECK FOR THE RETROACTIVE OTHER 6 MONTH AND HE WOULD SEND IT AS SOON AS HE RETIRES. HE DID THIS THE SAME DAY AND THE CHECK CAME 3 DAYS LATER. ALSO ONCE ON SSD FOR ONE YEAR YOU GET MEDICARE WHICH COVERS HOSPITAL AND DOCTORS THEN YOU JUST NEED A PLAN TO COVER MEDS AND THIS IS $78 A MONTH AND TAKEN RIGHT OUT OF THE CHECK. IF THERE IS ANYTHING ELSE I CAN HELP YOU WITH JUST LET ME KNOW. TAKE CARE
Currently I am on SSDI and receive long term disability insurance payments from my former employer.  This is how the system has worked for me..and how my retirement benefits were explained.  I took long term disability leave first and collected 60% of my salary from long term disability insurance.  Once I received SSDI approval, my long term diability payout was reduced by the amount of SSDI income I received.  My total monthly income remained the same - but now it is a combination of reduced long term disability and SSDI.  I was told that when I am eligible for retirement from my employer, my long term disability payments will end.  My SSDI benefits continue until I convert to Medicare.  I will receive 100% of my accrued pension.  I may be wrong, but I was told that my pension payout has no bearing on my SSDI.  SSDI and medicare impact one another and for some employers your pension payout is reduced when medicare kicks in.  Boy.....isn't this confusing!  Good luck.

STELLA,

THE ONLY WAY MEDICARE AFFECTS SSDI IS THAT YOU WILL PAY MONTHLY AND IT WILL BE TAKEN OUT OF YOUR CHECK, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU COMPANY UNLESS THEY ARE GIVING YOU MEDICAL INSURANCE WHICH MY HUSBANDS IS, SO NOW THEY STILL GIVE HIM MEDICAL INSURANCE TO COVER PREscriptIONS. MEDICARE IS THE PRIMARY INS AND HIS COMPANY INS IS THE SECONDARY, AND PENSION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS EITHER. YOUR RIGHT IT IS SO CONFUSING EVEN TO US AT FIRST BUT NOW HE'S BEEN ON IT FOR about 2 YEARS SO I THINK I UNDERSTAND IT A LITTLE BETTER. I HOPE THIS INFO HELPS TAKE CARE MISKEL
