Primary Hyperparathyroidism?

Soooo, I need help from you fellow healingwell bloggers. I've had a number of health
issues over the past six months that have been overwhelming. First I got strep throat
back in February of this year. Which led to C Difficile from the antibiotics. Which led
to about twenty CT scans that caused my thyroid to go all whacko and now I have
Hypothyroidism. But I noticed throughout all these months that my calcium levels are
always elevated. Anywhere from 10.2-10.6.

I was told by a doctor in the ER to get my PTH levels checked but I never did. Sadly,
I completely forgot he had even mentioned it! Well, these past two months have been
horrible for me. I feel like I am literally dying everyday. And I mean this in the "I'm
so sick, tired and feel awful" way not the "Hey, I'm a hypochondriac" kind of way.

Any who, I digress. So I went to the ER today complaining of debilitating dizziness, numbness,
etc. It was 9:00 am and I had not eaten yet. Which I was told was not a bad thing before a
blood test. I received my results at about 1:00 pm. My calcium levels were at 10.2 even
though I had consumed none this morning. My vitamin D25 hydroxyl level was test and was a
*L 16.

The ER doctor told me that all I needed was Vitamin D supplementation. Which I don't deny. I never go
in the sun due to my SLE and do not consume any vitamin D through foods, so I kind of had
an idea that I was deficient. But I am also not stupid. I told him I was weary to take supplements
because vitamin D raises calcium levels and since mine were already at 10.2 I felt that was
unsafe. I said it sounded like a parathyroid problem. He told me that I was over thinking it and
that he believed I had anxiety. I told him to shove it.

So, this is where I am asking for help. I did research and found this:

If you have high blood calcium and low vitamin D, you must have a parathyroid tumor in the neck and you need an operation to remove the tumor. It is a tumor and it will not go away. Vitamin D levels have nothing to do with it--except to prove that the source of the high blood calcium is your bones, not your diet. The low vitamin-D levels is the body's way of preventing the intestines from absorbing more calcium. The body is protecting itself! Do not avoid parathyroid surgery because your doctor says your vitamin D level is low, and that the low vitamin D is the cause of your problems. This is silly and there is no way our body's can do this. If your doctor says that, then he/she doesn't understand the difference between the yellow blob and the blue blob in the graph above.

This is a myth, and this myth is busted. The low Vitamin D did NOT cause the high PTH and high calcium... in truth, the parathyroid tumor is making PTH which is taking calcium out of the bones and putting it into the blood. Furthermore, it is very typical for patients with parathyroid tumors to have calcium levels that go up and down... high sometimes and back to normal some times..... this is typical for patients with parathyroid tumors. The tumor doesn't regulate the calcium well, and the levels go up and down."

Is this something I should pursue with my endocrinologist? I mentioned to him before briefly my concerns
with my calcium levels to which he brushed off and said my PTH was tested back in March this year and
was fine. Which is a lie, because I carry all paperwork regarding my blood tests and they did not test it.
I have an appointment with him in September but would like to schedule sooner if my hunch is right.
Which I believe it is.

Sorry, I'm no help whatsoever with parathyroid issues. You might do a search for parathyroid support groups to see if there's one on line.

Hi BFogg, I understand what you're talking about, I have hyperparathyroidism and its been going on for more than two years. My calcium fluctuates between 9.7 to 10.4, my Vitamin D was a little below normal so the doctor told me that the low Vitamin D level causes hyperparathyroidism, so I took the Vitamin D. Last Thursday, I went to the ENDO and she did more blood work, calcium, Vitamin D and the PTH, my calcium and Vitamin D are showing within the normal ranges but my PTH was 98.1. Every time these doctors do my PTH it gets higher and higher. My doctor hasn't called me about my results yet, cause I have to do a 24 hour urine tomorrow.

With me I also have multiple nodules on my thyroid one is 3.1 cm and the other is over 1. cm and a bunch of smaller ones, my thyroid hormones are within normal range but everyday for over two years I feel like crap. I've had a lot of anxiety with dizziness, dizziness is a swaying feeling when I walk. I have been on an antidepressant for one year, I have gotten better but still suffering everyday.

You mentioned dizziness are you also dizzy everyday? Yours could be from being hypo.

Looking forward to hear from you!

Yes, I am dizzy but more so than usual. So much so that I can't even function! I get this awful swaying feeling
too every time I walk and even when I sit! It's so awful I'm unable to do anything. My calcium level can go from 10.6 to 9.8 in a matter of 24 hours! Then back to 10.2. It was 10.2 yesterday and my Vitamin D25 hydroxyl was *L 16. He told me to supplement with Vitamin D. I told him I couldn't do that because it would raise my Calcium levels and that it could be dangerous. He literally cocked his head to the side and said "It wont. I think you're over thinking it. You seem to have anxiety, do you want something for that?"

I laughed so hard at my sad, little, clueless doctor. He actually had to google hypothyroid side effects on his
phone while I was there. The main problem for me though is that after telling my endocrinologist about my
low Vitamin D and "slightly" elevated calcium levels, he said it wasn't a problem and would not test me for it.
I currently live in Florida and they happen to have a whole floor at the Tampa General Hospital fully dedicated
to people with Hyperparathyroidism/parathyroid problems. I'm now physically at the point where I can barely move or eat and at the age of 22, this should not be happening. I'm thinking about driving allllll the way to TGH and going in the ER, present them with my labs explain that my specialist is unwilling to test my PTH and
let them know how important it is for me to get this done. And hope that they don't think I'm a nut.

I've done a lot of research and short of taking pills to lower my calcium, (which will not fix my symptoms) the only other option is surgery. TGH is actually considered the best in the U.S at parathyroid surgery. So I'm putting all my eggs into one basket (so to speak) and praying they can help me. I happen to have a 9mm cyst on my right thyroid gland, so this could be the culprit!

I have heard about that hospital in Tampa, I'm in Massachusetts and my insurance wouldn't cover me to go there. I don't know if I'm allowed to do this, if you go on parathyroid.com and you have Facebook, they have a support group in there and talk to other people with hyperparathyroidism. I have read that hyperparathyroidism can affect your heart, I have acquired fluid around the heart something I've never had. My iPad battery is going low, got to go. Lets keep in touch. Nice talking to you!
I'm from Massachusetts, Quincy (:
I've noticed a lot of heart palpitations and chest pain which I've had as long as I've had the high
calcium. So I'm sure that's the connection between the two. It was nice talking to you too! Hope
to hear from you soon.
That sounds like a good resource, and I hope it's helpful to both of you.

Where I live - you can get a nurse to come to your home to take blood. Is that a possibility for you?

Hello
You guys really helped me with this forum. I now understand why I was dizzy, why I needed surgery for hyperparathyroidism and why my PTH levels were high and I felt like crap for the last 3 years. Doctor took out 2 parathyroids but left the benign nodules in during the surgery. My PTH levels went down and calcium went back to normal and I was feeling great for the last year, but recently after a routine exam and blood work, doctor called to say PTH levels appear to be going back up from 152 after surgery to 206 now since October of last year. She said she will monitor and repeat labs and ultra sound in 3 months, but I just do not understand why this is a problem again.....for some reason I thought that after having surgery....I would not have to deal with this anymore....but I guess I was wrong. Any help you guys would be appreciated. Thanks.
So sorry and how frustrating for you.
