I have the same problem with the cough, they gave me an inhaler to use when i get shortness of breath. I also take lisonpril which also causes coughing. I am hopefully have\ing the surgery in a minth. It will all depend on my weight. Good luck with the tests. I am a little nervous about the surgery but am looking forward to not being sick all the time. Good luck to you
Hi I too suffer with GERD the problems you are having with breathing is due to inhaling the acid fumes into the lungs which can cause chemical pneumonia.
Honey, your ENT is a complete idiot. Let me guess, been in practice for a long time? Moron. He even SAID your voice box was red and swollen. Tell ya what.. go to another ENT (a BETTER younger one) and take the pictures of your vocal cords with you. I'm assuming you had a videostrobe where they look at them? Go into the back of your throat?
Here's my theory. You have VCD (vocal cord dysfinction). It took me 10 months to get diagnosed and meanwhile I couldn't take a good breath. This is due to reflux. The acid has damaged your vocal cords and they close(or partially close) when they need to be open. The good news and bad news...
Good news is your vocal cords can be repaired back to normal.
Bad news is they'll get damaged again if you keep having reflux.
Please please PLEASE trust me. I've gone through every single lung, heart and stomach test. Had my blood taken more times than I can count. Had so much nuclear testing it's a wonder I don't glow in the dark. 4 hospitals. 2 cities I can't remember how many Drs. My referred pulmonologist from a large teaching hospital in Pittsburgh suspected it and I was sent to another teaching hospital ENT and it was confirmed. It's NOT anxiety or panic. However, I'm sure you do panic from not being able to breathe. Not the other way around. So before your Dr sends you off for all these expensive unnecessary tests, get those vocal cord pictures from your ENT, get referred to a better Dr in a large teaching hospital. It's so simple a diagnosis but it's usually missed and treated as anxiety because the Drs don't keep up with new treatments. Don't let yourself suffer.

My GERD was making my asthma terrible. But I gave into my fears of surgery and went through it. It's now 14 days post surgery (270 degree wrap-Hill Procedure) and I'm feeling great! No more constant coughing!

Stormie, I was in overnight. Went in Tuesday morning, home by Wednesday evening.
I only asked for pain meds Tuesday at 12:00pm. As a preventative I took some pain med before I rode the five hour drive home (slept most of the way). I took a little to sleep that night and the next night, but no more needed. :)
Mine you, I had the Hill which is not as tramatic as the Nissen.

Hi I am also new to this. Im a 35 yr old female who have suffered anxiety and severe panic attacks since the age of 16. I have recently been through a stressful event which have bought on gert symptoms. I also have the breathing difficulties has other people on here. I went to my gp who said i had asthma, was given the blue and brown asthma pumps but am still getting this breathing difficulty along with extreme heartburn sore thoart and a need to yawn to take a deep breath. This breathing is not down to my anxiety or panic attacks as it is slightly a different experience. I have had my lungs checked chest checked and been put on a heart monitor which was absolutely fine. I am going back to my gp today has it is such a scary feeling. The bouts of breathlessness return mostly after I have eaten. Antacids seem to help for a little while but does not solve it in anyway. Will keep you updated
Sarah, I started you a thread of your own. <SPAN lang=EN>

I was diagnosed with GERDs more years ago than I can remember. I do not like spicy foods, so not drink coffee. I have been on Protonix (well now a generic due to insurance) for years. I was also diagnosed with Shatzki's ring caused by the Gerds. I used to wake up in the middle of the night unable to breath, pains in my chest and a burning throat. I do everything they have told me to do. I recently have had to have a lot of procedures where I have had to have anesthesia. Even though I had nothing on my stomach, the anesthesiologist told me he was glad he put a tube down because he had never seen so much acid come up through the tube (which he said may very well have asperate into my lungs and kill me.) I have also been having breathing problems that are hard to explain how it feels. I feel like my airway or lungs spasm or something. It was happening at night when I lay on my side but now it is most of time. It causes me to do a sudden wheezy type cough. My doctor gave me Advair but it did nothing. He did an oximeter test and said my oxygen level drops some at night. He of course just put me through a sleep study for sleep apnea but since it happens during the day I do not believe that is what it is. He also scheduled me with a lung specialist (I recently had a scare with cancer that can metastisis into the lung, so he is paying more attention to my symptoms now.) I have not gotten back the sleep study results but hopefully I will get to the bottom of my breathing problems.
If you have acid flowing that freely it's probably affecting your lungs. Mine was getting into my lungs daily. I had surgery and they fixed it so I don't have it happening any more.

Hi. I'm new here. I found this forum from searching if heartburn, stuffy nose, trouble swallowing, "lump" in throat feeling, not being able to take a deep breath were related. I'm guessing they are. Lol!
I've been having that 'not being able to take a deep breath' feeling for a few years now. I was put on Xanax. They thought it was anxiety. I think I GOT anxious from not being able to take a deep breath!
I'm sooooo tired of making myself yawn (which I just now did) just to take a deep breath. It ruins my entire day!
I have horrible heartburn right now. It's getting worse and worse as the days go by. This is the worst it's ever been. I'm going to see an ENT regarding my deviated septum soon. I'm definitely going to bring this up when I see him. I can't go on like this.
Hope y'all feel better.

I have GERD long time (many years but symptons increasing more. I'm 45. I start taking L-glutamine 1/4 tbsp twice a day, DGL 2 before lunch, 2 Essential enzymes 500mg. with meals, I bought Magnesium Citrate (brand solgar.( I read about in DR Mark Hyman) 400mg. I took I felt weird burning sensation all over my body especially in my esophagus with spasms I couldn't breath. I won't gonna take anymore I freak out. I took lot of water. what to do PLEASE ADVICE me. I started this because my symptoms getting worse when I do exercises. especially lifting I felt shortbread, dizziness, palpitations in my head even other day I saw lights in my eyes during two hours more less. I didn't go to ER cause as always they gonna tell me is my stomach problem. I took EKG, stress test and everything looks fine with my heart. I read a lot in internet and I'm trying everything since ACV (feel some reliefs especially before going to bed) to pills as mentioned above. Please tell what to do. I'm doing something wrong? Please Advice me. Thank you a lot.
I've had GERD since 2000, and have been on some sort of PPI since then. My GERD progressed to Barrette's burn thankfully, it was successfully ablated using BarrX process.
Anyway, over the years, I've experienced some very strange symptoms that doctors can never seem to resolve. Dizziness, lightheaded, and more recently breathing issues.
The breathing issue was the worst when I was living up in Colorado and found myself getting winded just walking across the room, yet, I was able to climb mountains and perform very strenuous cardio workouts...but sitting still in a room, my head would get fuzzy, memory always fell short, and I began having blood pressure issues that seemed to be related to sodium.
I came to realize that I had started taking a newer form of PPI, and when I switch off of it back to the one I had been taking previously, my breathing got better within a day and a half. I wasn't sure about it, so after a couple of weeks, I tried going back to the newer PPI and my breathing issues returned - again after about a day and a half.
I have long suspected (because I've been taking PPIs for 12 years) that the body can't properly metabolize some of the chamicals in the PPIs. I now suspect it even more so.
I have been very vigorous about eating properly and when I actually stopped drinking coffee, most of my GERD issues abated, and I was able to drastically reduce my PPI intake. I now have found great relief in using the generic Omeprozole (with Magnesium)(from Walmart) at a much reduced dosage. DO NOT STOP TAKING YOUR MEDS WITHOUT YOUR DOCTOR'S ORDER - however, I would highly advise discussing this with your doctor - particularly if you are experiencing breathing issues while taking a PPI.
Most recently, I have been experimenting with different dieuretics trying to find ways to reduce my sodium and thereby reduce my blood pressure. I found that watermelon was exceptionally good at lowing my sodium and my BP, but it was playing havoc with my blood sugar levels. Then, the other night, I grabbed a bottle of straight Cranberry juice - not the big name juice that has more grape, pear, and apple juice than cranberry, but the 100% pure cranberry juice - no sugar, nothing. It's bitter as heck, but overnight, my sodium dropped, my blood pressure was like my 17 year old son's, and my breathing was like new. As I sit here, a week ago my breathing would have been a bit labored, but today, my breathing is very smooth, easy, and very shallow - almost like I don't need to breathe at all. I'm thinking that the cranberry is just the right diuretic to help eliminate the chemical buildup of the PPI meds that are debilitating my pulmonary function.
Again, I'm no doctor, and I assume no responsibilty for your health condition. I am merely stating my health issues and am stating the findings that I believe I have experienced for my own body. I don't recommend that you follow my behavior, and I do not recommend that you deviate from your doctor's guidance. If you suffer from stomach issues and have not seen a doctor, I recommend that you first see a doctor and follow his instructions. If you then experience issues that don't seem related to your stomach problems, then discuss these things with your doctor.
