Racing thoughts

I am new to this but i will try to explain the best i can, early in the morning i my mind races with thoughts like my mind is in hyper drive, i have not been diagnosed with bi polar disorder. I See my family doc on may3 and maybe he can do a CT scan or something to better diagnose my problem, i am seeking counselling and i have to wait a week or so until i can see someone. Dose anyone have any other suggetions that might help. I am on 10 to 15mg of cipralex a day and 0.5 of ativan 2 to 3 time a day as needed. which seems to help slow my thoughts  and relax me a bit what meds are prescibed for bi polar and how effective are they in treating the symptoms, thanks to anyone who replies. Twiggy2
Hi Twiggy2
There are alot of different meds that are helpful for bipolar disorder. What works for one may not work for another. There is alot of trial and error involved in finding one, or a combination of meds that works for an individual. The ativan will probably be helpful with the racing thoughts until your appointment.

I am hoping so. 0.5mgs helps somewhat i probably could take 1mg, but i was only scribed 40 pills i will run out before my next appointment so i using them as little as possible.
Can a out patient counsellor refer me to a new pysch. I he does determine that i may have some bi polar issue or anxiety, just wondering. Thanks Twiggy2
Ativan is really strong, and is usually used for 'acute' (i.e. short-term crisis-type) episodes. It'll probably be real helpful to tide you over.

Racing thoughts are a common characteristic of bp, and may take a little fine-tuning with meds to get under control. They can be a real pain, huh?!

CT scans aren't used a lot because they're more expensive than most people can afford & are just becoming useful as a diagnostic tool to determine bp & schizophrenia.

Your outpatient counselor (I hope a well-qualified therapist - handling bp is beyond many counselors' scope) may well know of a good psychiatrist or several. Your regular doc may have heard good things as well about someone, from other patient(s). Check with as many people as you can, locally. You may actually be better off going to a psychiatrist first . . . just my opinion, but honestly your counselor isn't in a position to make a diagnosis. Although they're almost a necessity (I know it is for me, to help cope & deal with past problems, other issues, etc.).

Hope this helps & you get some relief soon! MindWandering
Thanks. I see my pych again on the 23rd of may. Hopefully he can prescribe something to help if can't wait that long i know that i can go the hospital for help.Twiggy2 If you don;t mind me asking what meds u are taking.
I switched from Depakote to Lamictal 2 years ago and find that even when I become manic, the racing thoughts aren't as severe.  The trick is to work with your Pdoc till you find the right combo--for most people it's out there--just have to experiment.

Being hypomanic is the worst as I miss my sleep and my Fibro flares-up big time.

Thanks for your reply, i hope that i find the right combo of meds to, i have not been diagnosed officially with bi polar but when my mind tends to race i think that is what it is anyway take care talk to ya later Twiggy2
Almost the 23rd, i still have racing thoughts, ativan doesn;t really do very much for that except from freaking out mostly i guess anway i am keeping my fingers crossed that my doc will switch my meds or proper diagnose me so it will be under contol take care Twiggy2.
Hang in there, your appt is just around the corner. Hopefully you start to get this under control and feel more comfortable after you see your pdoc. Waiting really stinks, I know.
Keep us posted

i will, i have a feeling that my meds will be changed and possibly get diagnosed with a mild form of bi polar, in that case then i can get the proper meds right?. Anyway tues will come fast in the mean time i am keeping myself busy cleaning up the house a little and playing games on the computer to try to keep my mind focused and not giving in the racing thoughts. Anyway take care twiggy2 i hope that this works until tues.
So far i am pn 50mg of Zoloft per day i took one this morning a little tired but i know it is a side effect, i don;t feel really that much of a difference but i know it will take a while to get into my system. I to hope that it works, i have read some horrible stories on the net about things that possibly can happen while on certain meds like ours i started crying because i was scared that it could happen to me but i hope not anyway nice talking to you and keep in touch, Twiggy2 but if have bipolr symptoms Zoloft doesn;t help with that.
Yes, I understand the racing thoughts.  My thoughts get obsessive also.  My doc gave me a new med 2 days ago. I have Been on Topamax which help with the racing thoughts but I can't think worth a darn.  He just started me on Geodon 60 mg I took one Tuesday night and didn't wake up until Thursday morning (today). I called him and he said Oh, well he had lower doses so I went and God the 20 mg doses.  I sure hope this one works. I think the worst part is waiting on the meds to work because it seems like the first one never works, then you find one that works and the side effects are so bad that you can't function.  I'm glad I found this site, because no one and I mean NO ONE around me knows or understands what I'm going through.  This is my first day on this site and I already don't feel so alone.
Please don;t feel alone u are not, I wish u all the best in fighting this, Since on Zoloft i have been crying like a baby, as for the racing thoughts still around but i trying not to let it bother me, i am going to see a pyschotheropist on the 29th and with any luck he will be able to help, i regards to meds or something that will help. Anyway take care and hand in there Twiggy2
:-)  so twig, are you saying that the zoloft is making you feel sad?i s that why you are crying, that is different, not exactly suppose to do that  sorry

Hey Twiggy2,

Hope you are feeling some relief.

I've been on and off meds for years.

One thing i noticed is that life is completely different without coffee.

the other thing i noticed is being on anti depressants I craved coffee even
more.

It's a crazy cycle. so many thing come into play. Medication is no cake walk.
Everyone, I've tried has had some side effect.

and now the theory is if you are BP you can not take SSRI antidepressants.

so, do you drink coffee or other caffinated drinks or high sugar drinks.

good luck

Hello, no i do not think that the Zoloft was what was making me cry, i'm not even really sure what was in the first place, i am still taking it though and slowing beginning to fell better although still some anxiety but that to is suppose to slowy get better as well it hasnt reached it;s theraputic stage yet which could take about another week or so, so i am taking ativan to help, tomorrow i start to see a pyschotheropist and see how that goes. Anyway if i am bi polar possibly the theropist will be able to determine the right treatment. take care let you know how things for tomorrow.
MY pyschotheropist doesn;t seem to think i have bi polar disorder but high anxiety which can also cause and one of the main symptoms of anxiety disorder. I have to see him in three week by then the Zoloft should be more effective in controlling my anxiety and things wwill be better, Anyway take care and i will keep u posted as to how things are going. Twiggy2.
Got my script for ativan tonight already took 2 and feelling a little better hands aren,'t shaking as much and my heart rate has slowed down a bit so i fell more relaxed a few more days and i should be ok. Back to work for three days and then home for four i get kinda bored but i am looking forward to doing things around the yard maybe going for a bike ride just chilling anyway take care all and i;ll keep in touch to let you know how things are going Twiggy2
I do drink coffee once sometimes twice a day but try to limit having late in the evening. Anyway Take care Twiggy2
