About 2 to 4 weeks after I started taking Nexium, a rash on my hand appeared. Small bumps that became a red area that spread down from my knuckle, down the back of my hand to my wrist over the next several weeks. A dermatologist took a biopsy and described it as "non-specific irritation". I mentioned Nexium as the possible cause to my primary care physician but he said the rash would be everywhere. On the Nexium site they mention maculopapular rash (which if you look up the description of maculopapular, it describes what is on my hand) as a possible side effect. Has anyone else experienced a rash after starting prilosec or nexium?
Not like you describe but since I've been on Nexium my face is red. Just looks like a sunburn on my face only. Nowhere else. And no, it's not rosacea. I truly believe it's from the Nexium. Why? Because my script ran out, I waited two weeks to get it refilled and the red face is back. So's the weight gain. And truthfully, the pills aren't all that great. I still feel crappy. Not as bad as I did without them, but still not wonderful like some people claim. Go to the Dr. in 2 weeks. Got lots of questions for him.
UPDATE on nexium side effects: Have not had any nexium since June 1, 2005. Lost 10 lbs, and the red face irritation is gone too. Coincidence? Hardly. To help with the GERD/EE I have been taking PRILOSEC-OTC every other day. It works, I feel great, and am very thankful that I quit the nexium when I did. All I can say is, listen to your body. Doctors and drug companies can only make recommendations. Go with what works for you.
Sounds like we all self-medicate!! I started Nexium three days ago (at 40 mg) but at $5.00 a pill, I just don't see myself on it longterm. I could take the prilosed otc for a fraction of the cost if it is just as good. Wonder if every other day would work for me? The doctor is always like...try it...see what you think....an attitude like he really does not have the answers about gerd. Someone is making a lot of money off this condition. Never heard of it till a few years ago....is it new? Lots of things to think about, you know? Nexium claims it will heal esophagal erosions, will prilosec too? Not that I know if I have any, but a nurse told me my chest pain was spasms in my esophagus. Ugh...to be normal again!
Most anyone with an allergic response to anything, whether it be a food, medication, or environmental allergen, will tell you the best way to test for this is to stop what you think is causing it. If it (the allergic response) goes away and comes back when reintroduced, then you can pretty much add up 1+1=2. So Marty, I would have to agree with you!! :)
Hearty, I've had esophageal spasms and they can be rather uncomfortable. I found a link describing this and thought it may help. Hope so! :)
I have been on Nexium for about two weeks and today I have an itchy rash all over my arms and legs. I took a Benadryl. After once having anaphylaxis shock from antibiotic side effects make me worried. Unfortunately Nexium was just starting to really help me. I will call the doctor tomorrow and stop the pill. I am hoping that I will be able to take a different pill for the gerd.
