Since the weather is getting worse, my pain has been getting worse. I am currently taking Darvocet however I cannot take it during the day while I am at work. My doctor just prescribed Relafen and I'm curious to know what it's like and if the side effects are that bad. I don't know much about it except thats its an anti-inflammatory. If anyone can give me some info from experience, I would appreciate it. Thanks
Wish I could help you out Des, but I've never heard of it... I googled it and it pretty much says the same stuff as all the other nsaids... I'll keep looking though - DuckDiagnosed January 2005 - Psoriatic Arthritis/Spondylitis

Diagnosed May 1998 - Graves Disease -Complete Thyroidectomy September 1998 - While 11 weeks pregnant

Current Meds - Enbrel/Prevacid/Synthroid
Past Meds - Inderal/PTU/Prednisone/Voltaren/Feldene/Mobic/Cortisone and Steroid Shots
That's okay Ducky... I think that I'm going to think twice about taking it. I'm not really supposed to take NSAIDS anyway so it might be a good idea just to pass. Thank you though. I still don't know why he prescribed me this since I have GI bleeding (UC/past peptic ulcers). Thats why he gave me the Darvocet in the first place. Maybe he missed that on my chart this time. I will be calling him again to ask for another option.
Yeah, he may have over looked it... 'cause it did say not to take if you had problems like that.. good luck and let us know what he says - duckDiagnosed January 2005 - Psoriatic Arthritis/Spondylitis

RE: Relafen. My son began taking relafen three weeks ago for his newly diagnosed Spondyloarthropathy. It takes a while to kick in but it works really well...BUT he is biplar and it made him manic. The side effects can be irritability in rare cases...and especially if you have an underlying mood disorder, otherwise it is relatively benign, except that you have to take an anti-ulcer drug with it...CNMN
I looked in my nursing drug book...they tend to print a lot of info we do not see on the bottles and on the internet.
The biggies were:
GI Bleed, abdominal pain, diarrhea, stomatitis, agitation, anxiety and confusion. Do not use with history of ulcer disease or active GI bleed.
I think you're thinking right! Question the Dr's order. Did he give you like a prevacid or prilosec to take with it? If doubtful, I would definitely hold off until you know HE KNOWS about your problem! It might just have been overlooked.
I took Relefen for years. It really helped my svere OA . I went off because after a few years it seemed to not be helping as much. I got a long fine with it. Pam

Yes I did and he acknowledged that he missed my GI probs on my chart. I see a different GI doc so I guess that happens. I told him for now that I just will keep my heating pad and my biofreeze handy. Honestly, I don't want to take any more meds right now because of how many I'm on already.
Relafen was the first NSAID I was presribed after I had been diagnosed with RA. It is supposedly "safer" on individuals with GI problems than some of the other NSAIDS. That being said, I took it for 8-9 months, but started experiencing severe heartburn and lower abdominal cramping. My rheumatologist swore up and down that it could not cause abdominal cramps. Now, however, I've been diagnosed with IBD, which is not a great condition for any kind of NSAID--rheumatologist now agrees that relafen probably was causing the cramps, as any NSAID can induce an IBD flare. You do have to be careful with Relafen. It is NOT a cox-II inhibitor, and can have the same potentially fatal side effects as most other NSAIDS.
It worked fairly well for me, however. That's why I continued taking it for so long. Some days I wish I were still taking it; the only other NSAID that worked that well for me was Voltaren, which also caused horrible GI problems and I had to stop after a week.
