I am just wondering Of PD sufferers how many of you have a history of this in your family? I know that it is not supposed to be hereditry, but would be interested in knowing of the PWP on this forum how many have family members with it.

Well lets see....on my dad's side there are none that have Parkinson's or any neurological disorder. And on my mom's well, she was adopted so there is no family history to go back to. Sorry not any help

Hello, I was dx with parkinsons in 2005. My mother had it from her early thirties and I have two first cousins on my mothers side that have it.

Welcome to Healing Well.My maternal grandfather had PD.They say that as far as statistics goes that increases my chances for PD by about 10%.I am currently involved in a study at Mass.General which is looking at the question of genetics and PD,unfortunately it will take at least a generation to gather the data.
You did not mention if you have PD or are a caretaker or just an interested party?inquiring minds would like to know lol.Stay well and again welcome Ed

Thanks for your reply. A friend has recently been diagnosed and there were questions raised about this and heredity. Do you know of other cases involving closer relations, parent-child for instance. Are there statistics on this? I know that a few people have responded but I would like to hear as much information as possible.

My grandmother had parkinson's and now my mother does.
Sorry, I should state that my grandmother who had PD was on my dad's side of the family.
so I guess I have it on both sides. and if it is hereditary, my parents have six living kids who could get it.

My husband has PD, his daughter has PD and we're pretty sure his father had PD although the father had so many worse problems the PD was like a side effect compared to the rest.

ways to help support healing well:
There seems to be more and more evidence that PD is sometimes hereditary. There have been genes discovered that definitely indicate a hereditary tendency - depends whether you have the gene. We don't always know.
A current study investigating this issue is the PROGENI study. Even though I have no known family history, I'm a participant. To learn more about this study, go to www.pdtrials.org and search on PROGENI. You can also go to this site for info on any pd study that you might be interested in or eligible to participate in.
Studies are a great thing. If we don't volunteer for em, how are we/others to learn, benefit, cure?!?

I've read several articles about a hereditary connection found in Italy and Japan. I know that there is diagreement on this subject. My mom, grandmother and her 2 sisters all have/had it. My grandmother was early onset (age 40) but the others were later (age 60). I have my fingers crossed...
